Another find at the used record store...

Jimmy Smith Hoochie Coochie Man (Verve recorded by Rudy Van Gelder in 1966)

Gettin' all Austin Powers this morning, "Groovy Baby!"

Credits include a whole host of studio musicians.  Either there were lot of people in the studio or there was a whole lot of coming and going.  The names I recognized are:

Jimmy Smith organ
Grady Tate drums
Kenny Burrell et al guitar
Buddy Lucas harmonica

Hoochie Coochie Man

Thanks to AD for teaching me how to gussy up the sample link!

AC,
Try Amoeba Music.  One of the best and largest used record stores I have ever seen.  There is one in SF (Haight Street, I visit when I can) and one in Berkeley.
http://www.amoeba.com/
Lots of everything:  LPs, CDs, videos, books, etc.  Music from around the world.  And their hours are late.  Happy searching.
H&B
H&B,
Somehow I missed this when you originally posted.  I came across it again when I was trying to remember which Monk album Bob was recommending as a gateway for me.  I checked it out on line this morning, and I definitely need to get up to the city to check it out in person.  They do have Monk's Music on vinyl for $20, presumably new (they don't talk about condition, so I assume it's new?).  Anyway, thanks for the lead and sorry for the delayed acknowledgement.

If you find this 'edgy' then beware of Giant Steps if you don't have it already, I love Trane but only put on Giant Steps when I can sit down and pay it the attention it deserves.

Here's what I've got going to decompress tonight...

A bit edgy for my tastes, but man the playing is amazing.  It's a new SACD from Impulse.  Another great one recorded by Rudy Van Gelder in 1964, and produced by Bob Thiele.

John Coltrane tenor sax
McCoy Tyer piano
Jimmy Garrison bass
Elvin Jones drums

Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis   ‎– In The Kitchen

This LP is a retitled release of the earlier album The Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis Cookbook.

In The Kitchen is a great tune, IMHO.

Gene,
You're absolutely right--it's a "horses for courses" thing.  The wrong album coupled with the wrong mood is not a pleasant thing.  It's taken me a while to figure that out.  I don't have Giant Steps, but Bitches Brew from Miles is another one that I haven't been able to enjoy because of the mood/media thing not being right.

Cheers,
AC

     wow  :icon_lol: :icon_lol: :icon_lol: :icon_lol: :icon_lol:

I almost referenced Bitches Brew with Giant Steps, so wierd you went there. I know a few folks who listened to it early on in their jazz sampling, and as a result came to the conclusion they didn't like jazz. I keep telling them it was the wrong album for so early in their attempt to develop their jazz appreciation. It's like giving a scotch neophyte some single malt from the islands, to peaty and salty, they hate it and think they hate scotch. Lagavulin almost did that to me.

My company network is hosed, so done for day, guess I'll put an album on.  :thumb:

LOL single malt is a great example!  Start with Glenlivet or The Macallan before tackling Lagavulin!  I still have to be in the mood for Lagavulin and then only do one finger--it has a serious kick the next day!
