Trying to resurrect my TT
« on: 17 Nov 2017, 05:45 pm »

I bought this new maybe 20 years ago ?  Was next to top of the line at the time although I honestly don't remember
the TT or the tonearms proper name. Maybe Well Tempered TT ? I remember a reference model above this.

At any rate due to several moves and quite serious illness in has gone unused. I want to change that. I'm looking for original documents or just advice.
The oil in the cup is now the consistency of vaseline. I don't recall it being that thick when new. I would like to fine how to easily remove the tonearm from its post so I can clean out the cup
as well as finding what type of oil I need to replace it with. IIRC the well the platter rotates in is 30w synthetic motor oil ?

Grateful for any help.

Well-Tempered is still in business; what do they say?

To remove the armtube/plastic paddle from the silicone cup you'll note there is a socket cap screw near the top on the rear black arm that you will remove. That will allow you to remove the entire upper assembly. If you want to also remove the tower, there is a screw located on the rear, bottom.  Alcohol will clean things up.

You should be able to get new fluid from the distributor. Alternatively, you can use STP (slightly less viscous). I found it sounds more open than the original silicone.

Can't help you with the 'table though.

That's a WT tonearm in your picture. One assumes you've a Well Tempered Turntable & Tonearm. There are several threads containing info on replacing TT & TA fluids. It comes up from time to time.

That looks like a Well Tempered Reference Arm mounted on a Classic plinth (there was also a Reference plinth made from Fountainhead solid surface; Google it); nice setup!  The fluid in the tonearm cup is thick.  I've had mine for over 25 years and never changed it.  It needs to be full enough to just cover the top of the horizontal paddle.  Easy enough to check this with a small flashlight.  More important is the fluid in the bearing cup under the platter.  If it's like mine, after removing the belt you can carefully lift the platter off with two hands while pushing down on the center spindle with your thumb and the spindle will slide out of the platter.  With the spindle in place be sure that there is enough fluid in the cup to completely submerge the two top bearing points.  BTW, while you're here confirm that the center line between the two top bearing points points back to the motor spindle.

The fluid in the tonearm cup is 100,000 cSt:

The fluid in the bearing cup is replaceable with synthetic motor oil.

After that, your turntable is ready to play an LP but use one you don't care much about one as you still need to do all the alignment adjustments to the tonearm and cartridge:

Do you have the thin plastic "Arm Protractor" that came with the table?  You'll need it or something similar:

https://www.vinylengine.com/cartridge-alignment-protractors.shtml

The belt is another component that might need replacement:

If you can, post some additional pictures of the platter, motor, base, cartridge and junction box on the rear.

Thanks you guys. Sorry to be slow to return and respond to the help. Life takes turns sometimes.
I'll start on this next week. I think I have what I need.
