Albums like: Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago

Hello troops  :P

I was wondering if you guys could recommend some other albums with similar, raw instrument sounds. I really enjoy how this album sounds like a band in the room. It's sounding so good on my stereo now it's sorta amazing. I'd like to find some more albums like it. I enjoy other albums that are a bit more processed, too, but this one is such a gem. The guitars vibrate under my foot on the floor like real guitars. So if you got some recommendations I'd appreciate them.

Thanks!

Cellphone spell check....

Beirut - The Flying Cup Club

If I didn't know about it I'd have been a great suggestion. It's not as good, but a lot of it is pretty upfront instruments.

Hi Folsom, I think I can be of some help, as I listen to alot of music in this genre.
Do you use Spotify to listen or sample music?
I think I recommeded Mutual Benefit on another thread to you .
Check them out : these are songs from their fatastic album called Love's Crushing Diamond
https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLmbc5DvBvuGZlZ6rLombRQDIs3KDFJvFA
Their EP on Spotify is also great ! It's called The Cowboy's Prayer
Great harmonies, song writing, melodies, instruments here.  I like to listen with headphones immerse myself.
Have you explored  the lead singer from Bon Iver , Justin Vernon's other groups? The one that has a sound very similar to BI is called Volcano Choir . Both albums are as good as Bon Iver's albums in my opinion ! The two albums are called Repave  :thumb: and Unmap  :thumb:
Here are three stellar albums to listen to . I'd love to hear your feedback .

Not an exact match, but I personally find these songs in similar vein.

Musee Mecanique - brilliant album and songs (they use a musical saw in one of the songs!)

Fleetfoxes have a couple of nice LPs that are in some ways similar.

Are you looking for more in the same genre, or just more of the same recording style/quality?  Most of the recommendations thus far are certainly in the same indie genre, but not necessarily similar recording style.  The first Bon Iver album was pretty unique.  From what I heard, he just locked himself in a cabin and brooded over a lost love for a period of weeks or months, and recorded the album in the process.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/For_Emma,_Forever_Ago

So, if you're looking for more of that recording style, I'd recommend "The Letting Go" by Bonnie Prince Billy which was partially recorded in an Icelandic cabin and is of a similar indie brooding genre, or Cowboy Junkies "Trinity Session" which was recorded directly in a large church I believe and is also of a hauntingly direct style.

Recording style and quality.

The National sounds like a decent band, whether or not they're similar. And I forgot all about Fleet Foxes!

Damien Jurado is an artist I discovered along with Bon Iver. Where Shall You Take Me, Maraqopa and Rehearsals For Departure are all excellent.

Great, simple mic'ing.  Great bluegrass.

I liked Illinois, but thought Michigan wasn't so great. I plan to go through the rest of that list, thanks!

I hear, ya, I just jotted down the first one that came to mind (Sufjan's newest music would likely be very uninteresting to you). Let me know what strikes your ear from my list.

cheers,

Yeah, nice list! Some in there I should have mentioned as well. Made me realize no on has yet mentioned King Creosote and Jon Hopkins. That album is surely magical and one of my favs.
