Michael's Silk Monitors in bees wing makore
« on: 15 Nov 2016, 05:00 pm »
Michael wanted a pair of Silk Monitors but wanted an unusual looking finish.  We had purchased a small batch of bees wing makore that we fell in love with a few years earlier but had never used it.  In fact, we forgot we even had it.

When searching our inventory for something unusual, we re-discovered it and offered it to Michael.

Here are the results...

And a close-up...

Happy listening Michael!

Stunningly beautiful. I hope my pair are equal to this, which I am sure they will be.

Wow, those look fantastic.  They're visually very interesting but still manage to remain a bit subdued at the same time. I like that a lot.

Jim, great job as usual.

Beautiful, and it shows that custom building can give great inherent satisfaction on many different levels.  Jim, what's the turn around time on a pair of Silks these days?

Joe -

It depends on the finish.  I would say 75 - 90 days is about average.

Beautiful.

Ok, I have new digs and moved to a new city (Pittsburgh!) and we have listening space that way too small for my VST's while we're renting. Thinking of putting the VST's in storage till we get the house and I think these would be a great fit. That way, I can move these to a secondary system when that time comes.

Here comes the obsession.

Now.........what am I going to tell my wife?

It appears as though Jim has a pair of Silk AT's ready for immediate delivery.

Well, if she's like my wife she's going to kill you anyway over any new speakers - might as well go a step further  :thumb:

Do it.

Nah... Don´t. I mean, you will only regret it for a year or 7, 8 at the most. Eventually the pain will wear off...

I have been meaning to ask this question for awhile, but did exactly know how to put it, but seeing these Makore speakers up close, I am still wondering:  what is the reason the tweeter is not aligned to the woofer?  I mean why is it slightly off center?  Other speakers do have the the placement "centered" but not these.  I assume there is a "scientific" reason for it, and would be pleased to know what it is... Just wondering......

It's a small difference, but it is addressing diffraction to give a slightly smoother response.

The majority of the Salk/Murphy designs employ it.
