Question concerning the SP1.7 and surround modes..
« on: 21 Nov 2003, 03:19 am »
First I'd like to say Hello to everyone, as I am new here and will be a Bryston owner soon.  :D

I am in the market for a pre/pro and have been looking at the Rotel 1098, the Ati 7500 and 8500.1, but then the Bryston caught my eye.

What I need to know is...

Does the Bryston take 5.1 and 6.1 material and add the 7th channel like other pre/pros do? Does it do this for all movies? Or will I get the 7.1 ONLY with discs that are truly 6.1?

I know if I get the Rotel, that I will have 7.1 for all my movies, regardless if they are true EX/ES discs..I am praying the SP1.7 does this, and I am hoping that someone in here can help me out.

I downloaded the manual and it doesn't get very specific. I saw that in the setup, it indeed has back left and right surrounds, but I don't want to jump the gun on this.

Thanks for reading and I look forward to any and all responses.

The answer went something like this.

There are 3 settings for back surrounds...

Auto
On/Yes
Off/No

If you have back surrounds, and want them used All the time, regardless of what surround mode is used, use the On/Yes setting. If you want them used only when certain movies have the required flags, and would use them better, then the Auto feature is used.

If I screwed this up, I apologize.  :o

I will use the ON feature. If ya got back surrounds, I say use 'em!  :D

Yeah, makes sense. There's no special name for the back speaker processing (ala Logic 7 or Circle Surround)? What's the processing involved on getting 7.1 channels out of a 2 channel source? Are the rears a matrix of the side surrounds, or something fancier?

Yeah, the newsletters are great!

Do you mail/email those newsletter when they're produced, or does one just regularly check the web site for updates?
