Title: Oldest piece of audio gear you currently use
Post by: Bemopti123 on 31 Oct 2010, 04:52 am
What is the oldest piece of audio gear that you currently use?

My prized possessions are F2A tubes by Siemens from the 1940-1950s.  Also, I am into older speaker drivers, latest, JBL 075 Alnico bullets as well as JBL 130A Alnico magnet 15" woofers, both from the early 1950s

Fisher Coronet tuner/preamp

Mine does not look this good- I purchased it as a shipping damaged item. I repaired it and it's solely a preamp w/ phono stage. It sounds VERY good and looks VERY bad!

I have a Fisher 400 rebuilt by Craig at Nos Valves.  It is heavenly.  I also have a McIntosh MC2100 and C26 that I bought in 1975.  I had to get a new stereo/ mono switch put on the MC2100 but otherwise no issues in 35 years.
I have an Audio Research SP3a that I bought from the original owner.  He bought it in 1975.

I have a few pair of JBL Control Monitors-4312A's and 4311B's that I use daily, they look very cool and sound excellent to me. When I was actively playing and recording just about every studio I was in had a pair somewhere and I always liked the big white woofer, I still do!!! :thumb:

I have two Knight Kit KB-85 amps from the early '60s that get occasional use.

I also use a pair of what started off as Eico HF12s from the late 50's, but are now a Dodd circuit.

Dukane twin mono tube amps - circa 1960.

Weirdo, but quite cheap, 2 x 6CD6 (each amp) tubes in it.

I just adore them :thumb:

CJ MV50, just updated by Conrad Johnson.  When it was back at the factory, they looked at the date code and it was built in July 1977....  Great amp then, even better now with all the caps redone.

I think my Nakamichi Dragon is from 79 if I've read the date codes right.

I guess the oldest piece I actually use in my Sansui TU-717 tuner which I had modded.  I think my Koss Pro 4AAA headphones are a bit older but I'm not much of a headphone user and I have not taken either pair out in years.  I also have a couple of Carver C-9 Sonic Hologram units, one in the main system and one in the basement system.  They are probably a few years after the Sansui as are the LD players.

The JBL L88 speakers I bought on July 7, 1972 for $168 each. The JBL's are still used daily in my woodshop.

I wrote to JBL about converting the L88's to L100's and received a reply in June of '73. I finally got the cash together and bought a couple of LE5-2 JBL mid-range drivers for $56 each at the beginning of 1975. I did the modifications at the beginning of my fine woodworking career so the results are a bit crude but they sound great and I always keep the grills on. The original L88 driver layout had to be changed so I could fit in a sealed particleboard enclosure for the mid-range driver. The cabinet sides have been braced and the original caps replaced with Solen. One of these days I want to tryout the L100 crossover designed by Dennis Murphy.

I have a Dynaco FM-1 that was subsequently modified (improved) with an after-the-fact FMX-3 multiplex board.
It was released in the early 60's so I suppose that this is my oldest piece of equipment, out-dating perhaps even my Dynaco ST-70.

The FM-1 cum FM-3 has since been rebuilt, but sports most of its original parts including all of its priceless Dynaco branded Telefunken and Mullard tubes.

For what its worth, apart from the fact that it does not have the best station selectivity it way outperforms 99% of the modern tuners available today.

I've got a number of vintage pieces I use in various systems around the 'ole homestead.

I use the Pioneer SF850 (1976) as my active crossover in my main system
(http://www.audiocircle.com/image.php?id=15258)

Also in the main system I use a pair of 15" Altec 416Z drivers as my woofers (early 60's)

I use the AR ES1 with a Grace 707 fitted with the Grace F9e (say 1982ish) with
(http://www.audiocircle.com/image.php?id=16930)

...a pair of reboxed Klipsch Cornwalls (early 60's dating on the drivers). We call them the Cornzillas
(http://www.audiocircle.com/image.php?id=27408)

I've got a vintage system setup in one of our our spare bedrooms. It's a Scott 299D, a Dual 1229 with a Sure V15 and a pair of Large Advents complete with zipcord and plastic interconnects.

I also use a pair of JBL 4410s (1983) in my wood shop
(http://www.audiocircle.com/image.php?id=19781)

...and last but not least, my dedicated 78 system. The tweed amp is a Stromberg Carlson 420 (1952ish) which drives an Altec 824 Iconic (1954) and the table is a Dual 1019 (1965).

Sorry no pics, but I recently assembled a "vintage system" consisting of:
Marantz 2250b (blackface ca 1977)
Marantz 5220 cassette (1970's)
Technics SL-D3 DD TT (1978) with Shure V15 IV and original AVA Longhorn.
Advent baby (ver I)

I also have hanging around:
ESS PS-8 loudspeakers
1993 SOTA Comet
SAE 5000 Impulse Noise Reduction Unit
TEAC Z-6000 cassette deck (B,C,dbx)
Hafler DH-200 (kit built all original
Halter FM tuner (another kit project)
SAE 2900 pre-amp

and a Zenith Trans-Oceanic SW radio with original tubes, that still works pretty good.

Cheers,

Mark

John,

Yep, I'm not quite sure about the date on that old Stromberg. There isn't a lot of info about that model on the web. I found a page on the 420 at the Radio Museum. The amp shown has a slightly different faceplate than the pair I have (I've got a metallic green one and the tweed). The page says 1950(?), but I'm guessing mine is a bit newer. I could be wrong though. All I know is it makes a great amp to play 78s. They just come alive  :thumb:

I always got a kick out of the Marantz ads where there had been some kind of disaster and most everything was destroyed - except for the Marantz receiver that still worked. :)

That's why I hadn't posted to this thread. While I have a lot of old gear, I no longer use it regularly.

I did try an old Jensen's Stereo Shop SuperPAS the other day, but I quickly switched back to a modern preamp.

I also played around with my Carver Sonic Hologram Generator (C-9) a few months back, but it really doesn't work any better than the other times I've tried it over the past 30 years since I first got it.

It's interesting in that the initial impression everybody has to the C-9 is "that's pretty cool!" Then over a period of time they get tired of the effect it produces and it's time for it to sleep in the basement again. I must have loaned it out to a dozen different people, and none of them decided to buy it, so it always came back to me.

I think it would be neat to have something like a Pioneer Spec 1 and a Spec 4, but I wouldn't trade my modern Sony tuner and CD player for anything vintage, nor would I trade for vintage speakers.

Hey!

Is audio gear currently use occasionally count here?  If so than here are my two oldest audio gears I have...

1902 Victor Talking Machine Co. "Type E" gramophone machine...

1935 or maybe 1937 Philco 84B Cathedral Radio...

I do use these two sometime. Mostly while I'm cleaning my room, watering my plants or while waiting for my main system to warm up. The Philco is great for getting news and weather reports on 1010 WIN and 880 CBS radio here in NYC.

Actually I'm listening to the Victor right now. Spinning Strauss' "Blue Danube Waltz" perform by the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra with Leopold Stokowski as the conductor. Likely recorded in the late 1910's.

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:

I do use these two sometime. Mostly while I'm cleaning my room, watering my plants or while waiting for my main system to warm up. The Philco is great for getting news and weather reports on 1010 WIN and 880 CBS radio here in NYC.

Actually I'm listening to the Victor right now. Spinning Strauss' "Blue Danube Waltz" perform by the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra with Leopold Stokowski as the conductor. Likely recorded in the late 1910's.

While I am not using them, one of my sons has been using a Sansui  AU777/TU777 for awhile.  I picked these up on a med cruise while in the USN in '67.  Have always wondered if mod'g that tuner would be worth it??

Hey!

I'm surprise that nobody else here have these old machines. It can't be just me here

Yup, those Edison cylinder phonograph machine came couple of years before Berliner/Victor disc gramophone machine. So, yes if anyone here have those early Edison home phonograph machine than it will be even older than my Victor. :D Actually if I had money and space I would like to get one of the cylinder machine also. But my dream machine would be a Victor V (the 5th) with wooden horn... maybe someday.

my turntable is ~1980.  subs are mid 90's.  sub amps are early 90's.  preamp is early 90's.  phono preamp is late 90's.  dac is late 90's.  tuna are anywhere from late 50's to present, depending on what is in rotation. dbx 3bx expander is from ~1980.  present speakers are combo oris horns, about 10 years old, (w/present-mfr drivers), and modded klipsch lascala bass bins from ~1980, w/more modern pro-audio woofers, about 10 years old, i'd guess.  main speaker amps are modern - almarro a205a mkll on the oris', and rawson gainclone on the lascala's.  but, i have wintage amps that have been put into speaker rotation.  i use a modern deqx dsp processor/x-over and eva ldr pre for its remote control capabilities....

bottom line, for me, is that there is plenty of older gear that is still as good as the latest-n-greatest...

Hi, Folks.

My oldest in-use component is a Denon TU-767 tuner.  This piece was new circa 1985 although I've owned it only 3-4 years.  Of course, it has digital tuning; unfortunately it doesn't have remote control.  The state of FM being what it is, I don't use it very often and then only for a couple of radio stations, (CBC Radio One and Radio 2).

I bought the TU-767 from the funds I got selling a TU-500, (below).  The latter was a beautiful analog tuner circa 1978;  sad to see it go, but selling it I did get 3.5X the price I paid for the TU-767.  :thumb:

I have a Nakamichi RX-202 that I pulled from the rafters of a friend's garage. He bought it a long time ago (in the mid 1980's) when he worked at The Federated Group. Remember that dude?,,,,, Fred Rated???

Anyway, a little maintenance work and it's making some fabulous tapes again.

Nice tuner. :eyebrows:

What else can be considered Vintage and classic but a McIntosh with those big, blue dials??? I myself, occasionally enjoy my MR-78, circa 1978? bought from a Russian gentleman from the back of a White van, won via an Ebay auction, in a frigid morning in a unnamed street in the Bronx in early 2002.

Hi all AC members.
I bought in 1985 this Nakamichi model BX-100, I brought it with me to Vietnam and use it on 120V. (Via stepdown transformer) but on 50Hz instead of 60Hz. Can't hear the difference. I had to replace the belts once, but they were not the original, they were a little too long/loose, but still works with good/new casettes. I use it once in a while.

I also have this Sony model HCD EX-200 that I bought 7 years ago, I use it in my bedroom. Not shown is a mini subwoofer with a 4" woofer (If you can call that a woofer) in a bass reflex enclosure, just enough bass supplement to make it listenable. Only problem, the CD pop up mecanisim sometime get stuck and I have to slighty tap on it to unjam it. I don't want the Vietnamese technician to open it, he make make the problem worst, as he did in the pass with other audio stuff I have.

When I get back to Canada, I would like to find and buy a FM stereo tube tuner.
Up to now, I have seen on this topic lots of nice stuff, makes me want to go back to canada to have the opportunity to buy one of those nice tuner, amplifiers, etc...
Please keep the pictures coming...

How about my Marantz 10B --you will be hard put to find a FM tuner that can touch it today, and still with all original tubes! Found a Marantz dealer going out of business in 1964 and got it for $500. However back then I was an Air Force Lieutennnant on flying status and that $500 was more than a total months pay and allowances. My wife nearly divorced me, really! Nice looking stuff.

Oldest piece currently in my system is a Denon DCD 1500, which is subbing for my dac, at the moment.  Still sounds good, if a bit "dark".  Or maybe it's my old Techics SL7 turntable?  Both somewhere near 25 years old.  My mains are Madisound (Dynaudio) MDY 3, which are 17-18 years young. And I've got a PAS 3X I built in 1976, but it's in storage.

Late 1940-1950's Zenith AM/FM High Fidelity Radio #X337 Wood

Here is a description from a vintage tube seller:  I modified the text for my future reference. :)
"This post-war AM/FM radio from the late 1940s to early 1950s... good working order. It has 8 miniature tubes, an excellent circuit, a good AM and FM antenna, and a reasonably large (8") woofer coupled with a 5" mid-range/tweeter which produces a nice, warm, tone typical of tube-type sets. Turn it on and wait 30 seconds.... when it warms up it cooks!  The front is an ivory-like plastic grill and the cabinet is wood, making the radio cabinet respond much like a contemporary speaker cabinet with smooth, warm sound reproduction. This particular set is complete with its original fiberboard back.  The front dials are (on the left) the combination band tuner (inside dial) and mode switch (outside dial) for selecting FM, FM AFC (automatic frequency control) or AM. The two rightmost smaller, dials are combination ON/OFF and Volume, and a TONE dial (bass/treble). The cabinet is 15 1/2 inches wide, by 10 tall, by 8 deep, making it pretty substantial and giving it the interior volume for good bass response. T is a singular phono jack in the rear".

I currently have two of those radios. Just as a safety issue, I would strongly suggest that you replace the wax/paper capacitor that goes to the phono input with a brand new one, or better yet, disconnect the entire jack. The capacitor is the only thing keeping the ground/shield from being at line voltage. If it fails short, there's a 50/50 chance of the ground being "hot" (depending on how you insert the plug into the socket).

I would also caution that these radios use a selenium rectifier which is an accident waiting to happen. It's also under power all the time the radio is plugged in, and there's no fuse. At the very least, if it fails, it will stink your house up with a very hard-to-forget and hard-to-get-rid-of smell, or at the worst start a fire. There are also a bunch of wax/paper caps in the power supply that are like as not to fail at any moment, which will initiate a rectifier failure. Replacing the rectifier with a 1n4007 diode and replacing all the power supply capacitors with new parts is highly recommended, adding a fuse is highly recommended, and until then, don't leave it plugged in. Ideally you would also need to add some S-I-T series resistance when replacing the diode (to make up the voltage difference) but that's more of a reliability issue with the tubes, and they are all pretty darn cheap.

The sound quality of a perfectly-working unit is decent. Not high-fidelity by 60's or later standards, but decent. It's probably worth the effort to go through it and fix the safety and performance issues because it's easy and cheap to do, but don't expect miracles. My perfect unit is kind of boomy, and while I am pretty sure it's working, the tweeter can be disconnected with little change in the ultimate sound quality. It has fantastic sensitivity and since it's mono, the S/N ratio and multipath rejection is excellent.

  Hard to forget, huh?

I don't want to overstate the issue, because this one is no more failure prone than any other of the same era. But some of the components, while good at the time, are not up to current standards and were certainly not intended to still be working 50 years later. And the design would not pass current safety standards.

But there were millions and millions of radios of similar designs made and they didn't all burst into flames.

      Brett

p.s. as an aside, the most difficult thing to get right on these particular radios is not the electronics, it's the mechanical aspects, specifically, keeping out rattles/buzzes/twanging of the various parts. The trim ring, for instance tends to rattle on the face when it's turned up, and the bottom of the chassis is thin sheet metal and tends to rattle. They benefit greatly from either self-adhesive lead foil or Frank Van Alstine's favorite plasti-clay on the speaker baskets. I think the lead foil is a much better choice in this case because it gets a little warm inside and the clay tends to get soft and fall off. As previously mentioned, working perfectly, these radios do sound pretty nice, probably as good as any current table radio aside from maybe the Tivoli Model one and two.

Brett: That's a beauty. Since I've taken those photos that I posted, I've thoroughly cleaned up the old Grundig... inside and out. I also cleaned all of the switches, relays, wire connections, sockets and tube pins. I tested the tubes, and they are all still in great condition. I had an immediate JUMP in sound quality and reception. I still haven't hooked up an external antennae. Stations come in LOUD and clear... but tend to drift at times (kinda of like in waves). I live in the country. I haven't figured out exactly why or what is the pattern. I'm sure that an antennae would help tremendously.

Otherwise, the sound quality of FM broadcast sounds so much more pleasing to my ears than most modern, dedicated tuners. This radio truly sounds musical and super analog. I don't play it through my hi-fi, so my expectations of it sounded just like what it's "supposed" to sound like are still in order. If I want to listen to the radio, I use the Grundig. If I want to listen to hi-fi... I listen to my system. Enjoy.

The Telefunken doesn't drift at allon FM, and that's with no AFC. My Emud Jr. , on the other hand,  drifts *a lot*. I haven't had much luck with Shortwave yet.

The sound on the Telefunken is very pleasant but rather "heavy" by hi-fi standards. but pretty much the same thing - if I want to listen to radio, I listen to the radio, not the hi-fi with a tuner.

a properly functioning sherwood tubed tuna will not be at all bass-shy - amhik.     though it might cost more to refurb one of these sherwood tunas than the cost of the tuna itself, it's worth it, cuz it's not that the refurb cost is so much, it's that the sherwood tunas are so relatively inexpensive.   8)

Please tell me that there is a lot more padding in this box than is apparent. KT88s are notoriously fragile (i. the internal parts are easy to displace with shock).

Dukane twin mono tube amps - circa 1960.

Weirdo, but quite cheap, 2 x 6CD6 (each amp) tubes in it.

I just adore them :thumb:

In high school I liberated a large abandend ferry boat of its massive Ducane P.A system amplifier. That thing was amazing . My budies and I collected all of our parents speakers and hooked as many of them as we could up to that thing for a big party. It absolutly cranked!!  I wonder where it is at now? I bet my friend still has it in his garage.

Doug S,
Even with a stereo tuner?
That might have to wait a little bit as I'm looking at some Bryston and B&K amps at the moment.  Bryston for home theater and B&K for bi-amping my Maggie 3.6s.
I also have that Harman Kardon F500x in the shop and need to get that old thing going again (hopefully).

Yeah, my Dukies were PA amps, too (I don't think they made any hifi).  They came from a public school in Milwaukeen that 'upgraded' their PA system.

Their 'upgrade' was my gain  8)

Thats Hilarious. As our senior prank in  1992 we tried to hook that old Ducane up to our school PA and have a pirate raidio station brodcasting to the whole school. Our plans were folied by a angry shop teacher who found a crawl space hatch had been used for acsess.

Here is a 9.9 out of 10 Marantz 140 power amp that I just picked up yesterday. It appears as new, with one little mark on the plastic power meter lens frame (lower middle). It functions as new, however, the power meters needed to be calibrated (gain at full, source as mono, set meter level control screw to matching high value).

My Paradigms are so efficient that the meters barely move. I'm sure if I had some power sucking ARs on it, it would be more fun. The meters look cool, anyway.

I was most fortunate to have the patients to wait for the right pieces to come along. If you are going to get a vintage piece, it should be as flawless as possible. Let the other guy buy the beat-up stuff.

I did send my 140 in to Mike Zuccaro for a once over as the left channel had a corroded contact in the speaker turn on relay, and I wanted him to check bias and give it the once over. Well worth it as he also commented on the spectacular build of this 75 watt RMS/channel amp.

McIntosh MR71 tube tuner from 1965

I had one of those. Beautiful tuner - the best one I ever owned. The sound was sweet and natural. It might not have been the very best DXer but I think it was the best sounding McIntosh ever.

That amp under my name is a modified Stereo 70 from around 1960. Those are the original output transformers. The power transformer is off the chassis, hooked up with a fat umbilical. It was modified by American Hybrid Technology around 1989. Dan Fanny designed all the boards and solid state rectifier - a lot more than just a diode. Those are EL34 with 6FQ7 input tubes. It puts out 50wpc and has a rise time of 3 Usec. It was originally my tweeter amp in a biamp set-up.

Hmmm, wonder what the frequency response of that power supply is, with those *gigantic* caps.  I know that's the way they did it at the time, but wow.

     Brett

I've never seen another amp with this kind of storage, at least one like this. Those big caps are 5400MFD @ 200V, strung in series to make 600V. I found them back then in an ad. I think it was in Audio mag. Those other caps on top are bypass - speaker caps and resistors to make it discharge faster. I don't know about Freq resp of power supply, but the amp passes a perfect square wave at 1K and 10K (near perfect). So response to 100K or close. It was designed as a tweeter amp. The high end is flawless. I use it full range now. It has slam bass and a totally effortless detailed sound. Two techs fixed it recently, replacing some old resistors etc. Both of them remarked how nice it sounds. One of them builds tube electronics.

Danny was a tube god. He used to modify ARC and stuff like that. My other amps at the time were direct drive electrostatic tube amps. They drove Acoustat panels at 50KV. They had high voltage TV cap tubes. They also had storage - banks of photo flash caps and custom made 25KV suckers. They were lots of fun.

Hi.
My Dynaco ST70 is oldest.
James
Bingo, James. I am using the same one matting with PAS-2. Both 50 years old, still kicking around like kids.

I super-restored both of them in my own most cost-effective way, WITHOUT need to purchase any new driver boards from vendors like most many upgrades out there. Now they both sing like a nightingale.

I'm a vinyl die-hard, my TT is also 40 years old vintage Thorens 125II. It plays my many hundreds of vinyls, recyled & brandnew like magic. I put it on my custom-built 100lb-heavy platform made of 2 hollow concrete blocks.

My loudspeakers are also vintage 40-year KEF 2-way bookshelvers mounted on steel stripods. I virutally rebuilt them to deliver superior sound from Pavarotti to Tom Jones.

Very old gears indeed. Yet the sound is not vintage at all - 3-D virtual soundstage, see-thru transparency, fast, dynamic & musical.

This old vintage system beats many modern tube gears, brandnames or home-brews.

Great McIntosh MX-110.  In 1962, you could buy tubes at the drug store or the filling station (gas place).  All had tube testers and a supply.

Most of my junk is old (some say vintage).
At the end of the day, if it sounded good in '62, it can today.

Early 50's Stromberg-Carlson ASP-422 Power Amp (using attenuators for volume control - no preamp); sound comes out of a pair of University Master Series S6 Speakers (3 way) in origional 1956 (or so) cabinets... Sweet!

Around 1960 I rebuilt a Stromberg-Carlson radio.  That meant I sanded it down and put on new varnish and put in new tubes.  I was a proud boy!

Great McIntosh MX-110.  In 1962, you could buy tubes at the drug store or the filling station (gas place).  All had tube testers and a supply.

Most of my junk is old (some say vintage).
At the end of the day, if it sounded good in '62, it can today.

Thanks, it sounds pretty darn good to my tin ears 8)

In my case its my KLH Model 100 AM/FM Clock Radio.  25 years old and still works perfect.  Wakes me up every morning.  Pretty good sound for a clock radio.  It was pretty expensive when I bought it, at $150, but I've certainly got my monies-worth and am darn glad I purchased it.

Technics is good but Luxman is awesome.

Marantz HD-77 speakers (1976) with original sculpted foam grills - designed by Ed May.  Still sound great with bottom end that really hits you in the chest.  Had the woofers re-done by Bill Watkins just before he retired.  In the the process of upgrading the crossovers.  Also have a Thorens TD160-C turntable (1976) which I mounted a Grace 707 MKII tonearm on in 1979.

What is the oldest piece of audio gear that you currently use?

I will have to guess, (since I have an all-vintage system), that is a tie between my Thorens TD 124 (MKI) and my pair of Quad II Monoblocks. but, I also have McIntosh MC 30, 75, Ma 75, Paragon 12A, Marantz 10B which are all old.

Oldest: Technics SL-P230 CD player. Never a moment's trouble out of this unit. It can go head-to-head with the much better known Rotel RCD-855 and cost considerably less. Bought in it February, 1989. Has a headphone jack and volume control, and powers my AKG K601 and Beyerdynamic DT 880 headphones at my computer desk. An overlooked wonder and one of the first low cost CD players that really sounded good.

2nd oldest: Rotel RCD-855 CD player. It refuses to die. Has many years of hard use on it. Bought it in spring of 1991. The newer CD players sound only marginally better, like the Sony DVD/SACD player I bought in 2003.

I have Heathkit W5M mono amps from the early 60's due for a rebuild this winter, then they go into my home theater system to power my Polk RT5 speakers. They have been out of service since 2002, but will be the oldest audio gear of anything I have ever owned when they go back into service.

The nostalgia bug bit me hard. In the late 70's my first receiver was a Vector Research VR-2500. (rated at 22 watts) I had it for a few years but never really got to appreciate the full range of the unit as my speakers were mediocre at best. I always enjoyed the sound in my Koss headphones though.

I got a huge deal on a NAD 3020. ($80 bucks new in open box.) I had that NAD in my system through most of the early 90's using it primarily as a pre-amp for my Nakamichi PA-7. I loved that combination. I got tired of moving that beast and kids came along and music was not good once the 2000's arrived. Long story short, I started over recently.

In my mind I always remembered the Vector Research sound and the TOL for them at that time was the VR-7000, but it was out of my price range back then. Later models came for a while but they suffered in quality and sound to the original line. I decided to search for an obtain a VR-7000 model and I would service it myself and restore it to glory. I found a solid unit with very little cosmetic wear. The pots were scratchy and the tape monitor switch was filthy. I replaced the Relay, just because, and tested caps and replaced some of them, i was surprised to find the largest caps were is goo shape. The seller said he was the second owner. Who knows about that, but it did seem like it was in excellent condition and was well cared for. No evidence of moisture anywhere. So, after some very rudimentary service, and a minor bias adjustment. It tried it out.

I am running GR Research X-LS Encores. No fancy Cables, no fancy power conditioners. I have slightly fancy interconnects for the tape deck, and from my Schiit modi3 dac. The dac is connected to the digital output on my TV. The Sound: Magnificent! effortless power into the speakers, I can not turn the volume past 1/3 without rattling the windows. And what beautiful sound as well. I can not compare it to the old NAD/Naka PA-7 combo, since the speakers are completely different. I can say that it has been everything I remembered and more. I have been rediscovering my music. New details have been emerging from the play back that I had not noticed for decades.

I guess you may say I am a Vector Research Fan boy. Most people never heard of this brand. It was not around long, they shut down in the early 90's in a less than honorable way I think. As near as I can tell, they made 3 receivers in the initial offering from 1978 to 1980. It was all down hill from there. The originals used analog Tuners and were built (allegedly) by crown radio of Japan. They were sold around the country and some in Military base outlets. I first saw them at Hifi Buys in Indianapolis. Back then on e could compare units with different speaker configurations. The VR7000 bested everything else in the room. Marantz, Sansui, Yamaha, Pioneer, you name it. Who knows, maybe the rooms was not set well, but in A B testing the VR-7000 just seemed to be a huge bang for the buck.

While I am here I might as well tell a horror story. My father recently passed away and my brother and sister were cleaning out his house before sale. Deep in the basement unconnected to anything I found two huge square cabinets. They almost looked like end tables. There was fabric on the front fact and around the sides. The back was ugly ply wood with an old paper sticker on it. There were 2 sets (2) of plain steel screws. on each. There was no front Badge of any kind. Printed on the back were the letter B300.

So, yes, I knew they were speakers but how in the world could these be anything but old?

So I put them in a dumpster and had them taken to the Dump!!! True story. and Hurts to think I never even tried to listen to them.

My own Dynaco FM-5 tuner.

At least it started life as a stock FM-5 back in the early 1980s. Upgraded with our own Super Tuner board set a few years later, then to our last new board set for that design, our Super Tuner Two.

I could not leave that alone though and about 10 years ago I swapped out all the current buffers on the circuit boards to LME49600 ultra low distortion types.

It is still in service here playing most every day (mostly on the one remaining public classical radio station in the area).  It still sounds really nice. Still worth listening too. I got that little Sony super trick digital tuner a few years ago.  Listened to it for a few days and then put it away.  It may have had all the bells and whistles and superior reception, but musically it was no contest to the highly reworked FM-5.

Large Advent

I just pulled them out earlier today from my basement where they have been sitting for the past 20 years. Checked the foam surround on the woofers that I had put on about 20 years ago and they were still good. I regret that I haven't given them enough listening time. So I fired them up in my system and WOW, with speakers like these, who needs the $5500 speakers of today? These have amazing sound at low volume level, good for late night listening without bothering anyone. Will post pics later when I have time.

Next project, the Tobin mod for my Bozak.

I also have a Philips CD104 hidden away, that is probably around the same age.
They work like a charm, and the sound is really good. Surprisingly good from the 14 bit CD104...

I purchased and built a Dynaco AF-6 tuner kit in 1973. I most recently used it 2 weeks ago while my streamer was temporarily confused by a displaced dynamic IP address, as the tuner remains connected and ready to go in my stereo.

I believe they are from the early 1930s

Oldest, in the main system, is a dual mono 150w Class AB amplifier with the Sears LXI brand. Built by Toshiba or Hitachi (best guess) and then tweaked by a master tech, it powers my woofTs below 180 Hz. I have an unmodified one as well.

My KEF C80s that I bought new in 1985 are still in my system.  I love them.  Modern electrics bring out better performance than I would have ever expected.

Introducing myself to the group. My electronics are mostly common. I built an EICO amp, Dynaco PAS3X moded. PAT4 I built. AF6 I built. Dynaco MKII's moded by me. Moscode 600's moded with Mundorf caps. I am an electrical engineer with ears. I am not a business but if you need help on a Moscode I can replace FET's, match sets, tell you how to adjust idle current, DC offset and High Voltage DC.
I mix old and new technology. I have a music library saved on hard disks as Wav files. I send the music out via fiber optics in SPDIF at 96K from an old Toshiba laptop. The SPDIF feeds my TriVista DAC with tube outputs, upsamples to 192K, the preamp is a Parasound and on to the Moscode and Martin Logan Summits. The Parasound is a concession to supporting 5.1 Video. with a second moscode, older ML stats for the rear and ML center driven by a Dynaco MKII. The Depth I sub does not require a amp.
So solid state from the 60"s tubes from the 50"s, hybrid amp from the 80's, DAC with tubes, laptop from 2000 (vintage right).
For me image is everything, when you can locate each instrument, play loud and not get ear weary the system is pretty good.
Tubes are not more accurate. But their distortion is pleasing, a rounded sine wave (tube clipping) sounds like the second harmonic was added... warm sound. A SS amp when it clips, the sharp edge produces a whole series of high freq. transients you know don't belong. How do you make SS amp sound good? Build it with so much range that it never clips.
So much for my first post  :D

Oracle Delphi Mk. II turntable.  Bought in 1982 or 1983, so it's 40 years old (or will be next year).

My dear departed mother co-signed a loan to help me buy this turntable.  Thank you Mama!

Not sure of it’s exact age , believe it was made around 1984..
This one was made for the Japanese market (100V)..
Recapped and serviced before I bought it around 4 years ago..

Nice. The L100’s are… well they shouldn’t be thrown away. But that receiver could be thrown into any stereo and compete.

I’ve got an Eico HF-81 that is in the same boat. I have some other stuff that needs a little work… My Barclay speakers are the current oldest. They are my main speakers at the moment. They trump all modern speakers I have owned by a lot. But they’re also the only pair I’ve ever seen.

My turntables are all vintage because modern ones that are better cost as much as expensive luxury cars.

Oldest piece of gear I use is in my office at work. I have the JVC JR-S300 receiver my mom bought new circa 1978 when she first moved out after high school. Could use some tlc due to a scratchy volume and burned out lights to the meters. It's a fun unit that has the vintage warmth and loads of punch to the sound and some sentimental value there as well.

They are still cheap comparatively for a high quality direct drive... about $500 from Japan plus another $100 for a step down 100V transformer.  Altogether, probably less than most cartridges around here.   And I think it is just as good as my other, more expensive tables.

A Heathkit SP2 (dual channel configuration) I actually have placed it as a display piece since the caps are very old and off spec. Time for a rest since it is the same age as I am and I know how often it gets to be difficult to avoid wanting a "nap"  I also have a BT Audio Baton which is at rest as well.
