Is there any good modern soul music?
« on: 30 Jan 2003, 02:50 am »
I'm talking about modern day Otis Redding, Aretha, Sam Moore, etc.  None of this derivative, repetitive R&B that seems to be the rage.

BTW, I loved the movie "The Commitments" and the soundtracks.

Anybody know of any good (or better) modern day soul artists?

I share your concern but find Alicia Keys sufficiently original. Other than that, no suggestions.

Well, now we all agree. How about some old stuff made new? I bought a special edition of What's going on? This also had a recording of a live concert of that time.

Excellent!

What would you consider to be the best recordings (musically and sonically) of classic soul music?

I guess I'll have to potentially sponsor some reissues on hi-res formats... :D

Angie Stone!!!  Soulful, funky, sultry voice, halfway interesting lyrics even.  But heavy on the soulful funk without sounding cheesy.  I have her album "mahogany soul".  Best of the "Neo Soul" genre, if you want to call it that.  Even has decent recording quality and some real instruments.

Aside from that, Jill Scott - "who is Jill Scott?" is pretty good.  Also check out Lina - "stranger on earth", who sounds the most like an original Billie Holiday without being an obvious copycat.  India Arie isn't too bad, but she is pretty corny sometimes.  Erykah Badu is popular, and surprisingly not as awful as her popularity might suggest.

For some reason, I never listen to male neo soul artists.

KevinW has good suggestions.

How do you feel about disco (the GOOD kind) and techno? Maybe you'll like deep/garage house. Not always singing, sometimes I hear AMAZING tracks with real singers and massive jazz/blues guitar solos.

Put http://64.236.34.141:80/stream/1033 into winamp url for a good station.

Not really soul, but soulful.

While not a new artist, Solomon Burke has a new CD titled Don't Give Up on Me which I can't seem to stop listening to.  Simple production but great soul singing.
Check it out.

I saw The Roots  on MTV's $2bill and one song they did with Angie Stone. Man, was it awesome! It was a sort of rap/psychedelic/soul song and man can she sing! Check out:
Al Greens greatest hits
Baby Huey and the Babysitters - The Baby Huey Story
Dusty Springfield Anthology-(awesome recording)
James Brown -Live at the Apollo vol2 (great songs, bad recording)
The ChiLites greatest hits
Im still looking for more stuff!
I think Soul/R&B is the perfect combination of vocals, songwriting, and instrument playing, and if properly recorded can sound soo beautiful. It should be used more as test music when auditioning equipment. Alas so few of it was properlyrecorded and/or transferred to cd, that it probably wont happen.
