"Chance's End" - Have you heard this band?
« on: 24 Dec 2013, 04:10 pm »
I gotta tell, I'm really loving this music. The classification is "Violin Electronica".
The violin is natural, "unmolested" and sounds clean and clear, with with a bit a tasteful electronics "touches" to back it up.

The band is called "Chance's End".

Here's their YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/chancesend/feed?activity_view=3

Thanks for sharing, Bob. Interesting stuff from the city that gave us Metallica. I'd love to see more threads like this one on AC  :thumb:

Ditto that. With 41,000 members on an audio forum, I would have expected more 'hits' and more chat about threads like these.
I try occasionally, but lack of replies is generally what disappointed me to the point of not doing it again for a while.

Sound's a bit like Lindsey Stirling. She combines violin with an amplified pick up and backing electronic accompaniment.
I will definitely check it out. Thanks.

Thanks for the links, Bob. Always great to hear new music. I really enjoyed the second link "The Blue Because." It's closer to a lot of the electroacoustic/neoclassical/ambient/whatever-folks-want-to-call-it stuff I've been listening to a lot of lately. Here are a couple of links you might enjoy:

Olafur Arnolds  a young kid out of Iceland who has already put out about a half dozen wonderful CDs, some very much acoustic (like the link) below, but his latest work introducing more electronics.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6u5D-5LWSg

Max Richter - most noted for that great cut from Shutter Island soundtrack, On the Nature of Daylight:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVN1B-tUpgs
but he also did a great "re-composition" of The Four Seasons:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lqZlDGBTbA

More uptempo is a band like Balmorhea out of Texas
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJUQPUDmHyg

There's so many good musicians out there who never make it "big" but are making great music in small studios without big budgets - Nils Frahm, Hammock, Rhian Sheehan, Johann Johannsson and on and on. Always good to find them!

Hey, I've never heard of  Chance's End, but I checked out a couple of your links. It is mellower, but it reminds me of Beats Antique. which are local here in SF I've seen them-really engaging live shows!
It also reminds me a little of solo multi-instrumentalist Emily Wells who wields a violin on occasion as well.

Beats Antique http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=au61wJbyw-8&list=RDyg2gDkWAKH8
Emily Wells http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkHVDop4cQI

About the music threads not having lots of hits on AC, I feel that the majority here (et al) have very specific tastes and stick to more well known music/well recorded music, therefore the fringe stuff just gets lots in the mix. There is so much amazing, interesting music out there–both well recorded and poorly recorded and produced;many audio enthusiasts are very picky about the recordings and overlook the poorly recorded music. I am generalizing of course, but I think you know what I mean.

Thanks for sharing the Chance's End music.

cheers, ed

i just checked out "extension of a nightvision" and, to me it sounded more like a viola than a violin.  the tone in the upper registers sounded more pleasing to hear with none of the "screechiness" that i always hear even with an accomplished player using a fine violin.  and the lower registers sounded more "full-bodied" than i'm used to hearing in most of the violin music i've heard.  (which is not much, admittedly).

all the vids that popped up on the youtube page were listed as "violin electronica", but unless they did some digital manipulating of the sound somehow, i would say the tune i heard was a viola.

don't count me as a fan of the violin, but this was a pleasing listen.

my knowledge of stringed instruments doesn't amount to much, but maybe a violinist will jump in here.  maybe you can tune a violin down lower and still get great tone.

Indeed!
All were very good, but half of them I loved so much that I added them to my YouTube playlists. Very cool music, thank you!  :thumb:

Thanks for sharing the Chance's End music.

You're very welcome.
I never heard of Emily Wells, but the voice "got" me, so I checked out some of her videos.
I really like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riHz7zX5J74   :thumb:

I agree with your reasons about why some of this type music never gets "heard". I'd add: It's too weird to enter the mainstream, and probably too "out there" for the majority for the audiophiles and hot high rez enough anyway. Shame either way. I see some of this wonderful music has been on YouTube for a year and has 300 views and a couple [thumbs up], but you get some a-hole with a gimmick and they get 1,000,000 hits in the first week alone.

And then there's fiddler Jenny Scheinman, below taking it apart with Nels Cline and Co. Ms. Scheinman has a head and heart in the avant garde with a sound that at times is reminiscent of Jean Luc and Papa John Creach ... but with more of an edge . I saw her at the Guelph Jazz Festival two years ago and she stole the show.

Oh....By the way...If you're a fan of "Beats Antique", then you'll probably enjoy "Kayla Scintilla".
In fact, I probably like Kayla more than "Beats".
Here's a good representation of their music. This is pretty cool.

Good work Bob,

Enjoying Chances, have not checked out the other Recs yet, but I will.

Good thread, thanks for sharing. This should be one of the main themes of this site I think.  New Years resolution: discover and share new music discoveries.

Thanks

Thanks Bear, and you're very welcome.
I've discovered more new music in 2013 than I have in all my previous years.
The equipment......meh....... as it turns out, it's not *as* necessary as I used to think.

Great resolution, though. You should work on that one.

In deed,

This is a guy I personally met when he had just decided to make a run at the music biz.  His father Bucky Baxterhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bucky_Baxter , whom I met on a trip to nashville, toured with Bob Dylan and has done studio work on a number of albums.  Anyway Bucky introduced me and my wife to his son and we have been following him ever since.  Its been interesting to watch his career progress.

Sorry, it took me a while to get around to it. I guess it's a great problem to have..."too much music, and too little time".
Good music though, I dig it. Especially the second song.

Thank you.
