Title: GR Research Owner's Audition List
Post by: Donald on 4 Oct 2011, 06:38 pm
Danny,

Is it possible to start a sticky thread regarding a GR Research Owner's Audition List? Many of us may never have the opportunity to attend an audio show in somewhat close proximity to hear a pair of your speakers. EX. Super V's, LS9's etc.

This is not a novel idea by any means. Several DIY build manufacturers and others have this available for potential customers. Of course, it will also take cooperation from GR Research owners. EX. SL Orions, VMPS, etc.

Just an idea as to your thoughts?

I had asked Danny that question couple of weeks back and the closest one is in Southern Maryland.

I guess that would be Rich ("Hal").  Thanks.

I'll get in as much listening as I can at RMAF.

Super-V with No-Rez and Jupiter cap upgrades, just finished building in late May 2012, so full burn-in will take a little while. Non-ideal small room, 12' x 10', but I've got a fair amount of bass trapping (4" traps, superchunks and VPR metal panel absorbers), so low-end modal resonances are fairly well controlled.

Associated equipment: Macbook Pro > Focusrite Saffire 56 interface > DIY silver interconnects > Bantam Gold amp > P-audio drivers. (RCA's direct from interface to Rythmik amps)

Hey Mike, does local-boy Dwight Twilley (with his great guitarist Bill Pitcock IV) play around Tulsa much? He was coming up right before Tom Petty (who stopped in Tulsa on his way from Florida to L.A., to get some Twilley mentoring), but for some reason the bus done passed him by. Shoulda been a star! Well, he was, sorta and briefly.

No love from his own hometown! He's the best thing to come out of Tulsa since Leon Russell and J.J.Cale. Tom Petty, on his drive from Florida to L.A. to get a record deal in the mid-70's, stopped in to see Dwight in Tulsa and get his advice concerning the record business. Twilley had been signed to Shelter Records the year before by Denny Cordell, and the 1st Twight Twilley Band album (entitled I'm on Fire, also the hit single on the album) came out in '76. It's killer! That's Petty playing bass in the early DTB videos.

Ah, I see the problem. My wife is the Tulsa native. I'm a recent (2008) transplant from the Smokey Mountains in East Tennessee.

Mike

I just looked him up, nope, don't recognize him.  In the mid 70's I was listening to Steppenwolf, Edgar Winter, Johnny Winter, Uriah Heap, The Who, Chicago, Three Dog Night, Elton John, etc.  Never heerd of no De-wite Twilly back in them thar hills :)

Twilley's two big influences are Elvis and The Beatles. Debuting in the mid-70's, he was really swimming against the tide. His last hit was "Girls, Girls, Girls" in the mid-'80's. Back to Tulsa and the local bars!

Mike, I bet your system sounds great.

But that wiring from the crossovers up to the speakers looks like a perfect RF antenna. You might see (or hear) if it sounds better to twist or braid that wiring to help filter out any RFI.

I think the wire is twisted from what I can see? maybe not.

Danny, I don't think RFI is a problem as I live in the boonies. Right now my system is dead quiet and with my new front end it has the most incredible detail and air. That is one think I have to say about these speakers they really let you hear any change you make to the system good or bad. A big :thumb: for your design Danny.

I had four folks over last Thursday evening listening to both the N3's with the Rythmik F12 and the GR-Research 12" sandbox subs in the living room system and the NX-Otica MTM monitors with the dual 12" OB H-Frame subs in the upstairs system.  Everybody seemed impressed with both systems though the OB system was the favorite. Which would be no surprise to anyone who has heard any of Danny's OB systems.

We spent four hours or so listening to the systems. I enjoy sharing the sound of these systems. This makes the third time in the past couple of years  someone has come by to listen to Danny's speakers.

Currently I have the following speakers available to demo:

LGK 1.0 ported desktop monitors,
N3 transmission line towers,
12" sealed sandbox sub,
LGK Wedgie monitors (open baffle),
NX-Otica monitors (open baffle) and
Dual 12" H-Frame subs (open baffle)

If you are in the Tulsa area and would like to listen to any or all of the above speakers let me know.

Mike

I'm about 30 minutes outside of KC/KS.

I have V1s. I was looking at the Super Vs, but waited too long to pull the trigger and the coaxes dried up. Gary Dodd had the V1s and he said he liked them a lot, so good enough for me.

Associated equipment are an old-school modified multi format disc player (Pioneer DVAX-10), ARC LS-16, ARC Ref 75 SE, PurePower regenerator. It's also my theatre space, so other amps and processor and 4K player and center channel and such.

Anyone interested in auditioning these, send me a PM. I only finished the speakers a couple weeks ago, so they are probably still breaking in. Also waiting on some GIK acoustic panels and drapes to complete the listening room, but they are already sounding great. Everything should be in place by mid-January.

Well,   as you know, we're only  a few  hours away, unfortunately, we don't have a pair of NX-Otica's right now... we need to build another pair out to have on hand.  We do have the Super 7's and the  NX-Treme's/ quad sub combo you'd be able to hear.

Why audition first? Just pull the trigger.

You've purchased countless appliances, electronic equipment, tools, clothing, etc. without auditioning them, so why are speakers any different? Besides, you would need to hear the speakers in your house and with your gear to get a proper perspective on how they sound. It's simply not practical.

Because, for me this is a huge investment and i want to really audition it if there is a possibility , although i do understand that it will sound different at my home based on my components that are in the chain, but it might also give me an idea how can it sound on a different room, gear etc etc, and based on that what can be improved in my system... that's my idea.

Sorry for the late response.   I just noticed this.   I am running fully-upgraded X-Static speakers with an X-Voce in a 7.3.4 Dolby ATMOS Home Theater configuration.   I have a pair of Odyssey Kismet amplifiers (one stereo, one mono) attached to the front channel (L/R/C).  As an added bonus, you can hear the GR Research A/V-1RS Surround speakers and a pair of "Double Trouble" (formerly Servo Sub 4) subwoofers.   Shoot me a direct message if you're still looking.

North Houston… Montgomery County. Just south of Montgomery.

X-Statiks with X-Voce & AV/1s in 7.2.4 system Denon AV 11 channel receiver with a Krell amp for front LR

Not the best room treatment…  20x30 room with 11 1/2’ ceiling…

No tube connectors… no audiophile cables … certainly no cable risers…  standard cross overs from original kit… don’t think you can buy these anymore… current kit has premium parts.

Hey, it’s a process…

I have Encores in Bastrop near Austin. 2 hours-ish away. They are not in my main system, but could easily be placed there for an audition. Lyngdorf amp, Feickert Turntable, The new GR speaker wires. Pretty high-end interconnects, HTPC with SOTA internal fed by Roon/QOBuz. But alas... no wire stands either. Maybe someday.

Heck, Danny is up near Dallas. You should just go to the source and listen. Although I never really figured out if he offers a demo service up there.

He does.   Just let him know in advance that you're thinking about heading up there.   And according to Hobbs, he's another two hours outside of Dallas, so it might be an overnight trip for those of us near Houston and Austin.

I used to have 2 1/2 acres and a double-wide in Cedar Creek.   That was before they built the International airport (was still the abandoned AFB).   Sooooo much has changed there in the last 24 years since I lived there.

Hi Tyson - I see that you have your OB Triple subs positioned in tandem behind the speaker - does this make any difference in the sound ?  Can I do the same with LS 9s?

I have them all in horizontal alignment and facing the listener - takes too much space and especially starts to touch the viewing screen.

Yes of course, it' makes the sound more solid, when you have deep bass down to 16hz.  The NX-Oticas go down to 30hz in my room because the room is pretty small.  I run the subs from 16hz up to 50hz.   There's some overlap but it still measures and sounds good.  I imagine it would be similar for your LS9's.

Title: Request for NX Studio Monitor Demo in Half Moon Bay, CA
Post by: rockandbake on 15 May 2023, 10:04 pm
I hope this message finds you all in good spirits and enjoying your music!

My name is Vick, an avid music listener and an audiophile based in Half Moon Bay, California. I have spent considerable time refining my audio system to match my preferences for dynamics, clarity, tonality, and an immersive soundstage. Over time, I have tried numerous speakers and components, seeking that perfect balance that brings my favorite music to life.

Recently, I have been in conversation with Danny Richie, considering the NX Studio Monitor. His detailed insights and the promising attributes of these monitors have piqued my interest. However, as you would understand, taking the plunge to purchase a set of completed speakers, especially without having had the opportunity to listen to them, can be a bit daunting.

Therefore, I am reaching out to you, fellow audiophiles, in the hope that someone in the greater San Francisco Bay Area or Sacramento region has a pair of NX Studio Monitors that I could audition. I believe this would offer me a valuable perspective and confidence in making an informed decision about this significant investment.

I appreciate your understanding and any assistance you can provide. Please feel free to reply to this post or contact me directly if you would be open to hosting a listening session. I'm more than happy to adhere to any conditions you may have regarding such a meet-up, given the current circumstances.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to potentially meeting some of you and sharing in the joy of high-quality music reproduction.

Anybody around the Boston area with NX-Studios, NX-Oticas, or double or triple OB subs?

I would really love to hear any of these before taking the plunge.

NX-Tremes with 2 Triple Threat subs.
26x28x9 ft basement room with treatments.
Far south suburbs (30 miles) of Chicago near the Indiana border.
2 Brinkman Bardos. One with Soundsmith Zephyr MIMC☆, the other the Kiseki Purple Heart carts. Minidsp SHD. Aragon Palladium 1K amps. PS Stellar or Darlington Labs phono preamplifiers. Eversolo DMP-A6 streamer.
All enthusiasts are welcome to hear what is on offer. I am happy to discuss the good and the bad.

My fellow enthusiast brother was blown away. He was hung over and said the best compliment he could give was that the music was so compelling he couldn't  just haze out or drift off. He HAD to listen.

Hi everyone and happy new year!

I would love to audition a pair of NX-Oticas or NX-Tremes to make a decision on whether to purchase one. Anyone near Boise, Idaho, or Denver, Colorado, who would be open to hosting me please?  :)

I am new to the forum so I am unable to receive PMs or use the search function for now.

Cheers,
Timothy

Hi @Tyson! Your systems look amazing! I will be in Denver on the 13th and 14th of January and would really love to have a chance to listen to your NX-Oticas as I'm thinking of purchasing a pair.

If you would be willing to host me, please PM me :)

Cheers and happy new year!

I live in McKinney, TX. I have a pair of X-LS Encores and a Double Trouble Sub. If you need an audition drop me a PM.

I can also assemble Encore bookshelf flat packs for a flat fee of $75

Also, after building the set of X-LS Encores and the Double Trouble open baffle sub for myself. I had MDF left over, so I built another pair of Encore cabinets.  They are built using rabbit joints, the cabinets are sanded and finished to a paint-ready quality. This way they are ready for you to paint or veneer.  The edges of the cabinet can be finished with a round over or chamfer whichever you prefer. I can also cut out the back for either tube connectors or the cup for binding posts.
Asking $250 for the cabinet.

Thanks,

Nathan

Anyone with NX Oticas in the LA area?

Almost going to pull the trigger (based on experience with other GR Research products), but I would like to hear them before the final decision.

I don't mind driving a bit.

THANKS!
