Having an idea what type of system works best for you going in will help you make better choices. If money isn't burning a hole in your pocket, buying used will save you a lot of money- you can profit from others' buyer's remorse.
As a value proposition, headphones outperform speakers by about 25:1 IMHO, but they are two radically different listening experiences and you pays your money and makes your choice.
