Chesky Records 192 kHz/24-bit WAV 1-to-1 Masters

Just received this Chesky newsletter:

"Chesky Records introduces the 192 kHz/24-bit series. These are not limited editions but one-to-one copies of our master 192 kHz/24-bit tapes. These are standard 192 kHz/24-bit WAV files that you can burn onto your computer's hard drive and then play back on any device that will support 192 kHz/24-bit. These discs will NOT play on DVD-audio players, CD players, and SACD players. These discs contain up to 4.7 GB of music each on a Gold DVD-R.

This is a major breakthrough for us in sound quality. The one-to-one masters off a good computer system sound more like analog than any other digital source we have used. You will hear more air, tonal purity, resolution, and a much richer, deeper, and wider soundstage.
David Chesky
"

These should be really interesting if you have the ability to play it back on your setup.  Couldn't find it directly navigating their site, but here are the first five releases:

Well, I can't play 192/24 files.

On the plus side, it saves me from spending $45 for each album - ouch!!

Yes, it does seem like a rip to pay so much for essentially the same content that already exists.  Just mastered differently, though not likely much more expensive, if at all.

Yes, this seems to be the going rate (and delivery vehcle) for very hi-rez stuff.  Keith Johnson's Reference Recordings labelled HrX discs (24/176) are the same price.  They also use physical media to deliver these very large files.  I spoke very briefly with David Chesky at this years CES (he sat in front of me at the Bill Schnee 24/192 TAD demo...wow, what a demo) and he stated that the delivery of physical DVD-R's (at the time we were referring to HrX) made sense due to the current bandwidth needed to download a huge 24/192 album.

Native 24/192 sounds incredible, but the titles available (even on this first Chesky batch) are not worth the money, IMO.  But the game is on.

Physical media definitely makes sense.

A 4.7GB download is going to take quite a while.   aa

I would go with the Larry Coryell album.

DK,
For $45 I would first go to HDTracks and sample these (except for Calypso Blues).  Heck, for $2.49 you could download a 24/96 song each and see what you think.  Also realize that the very good quality 24/96 versions are there at HDTracks for $15.99.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. Obviously whenever there is a new toy it is easy to get swept up in feeding it new stuff like 24/192  I am very much looking forward to the Kent Poon disc.

Please forgive my ignorance here but...do you get the Chessky disc and load it into your computer, then run a USB to a DAC and then into your home stereo? Is this how you enjoy these recordings?

The discs are data discs. So, you can certainly pop it into your computer and copy the information from it. However, getting the audio data out of your computer and into a suitable DAC is another story altogether.

As far as I know, the only USB DACs that can handle sampling rates higher than 48kHz out of USB without any additional drivers are the ones using Gordon Rankin's asynchronous USB technology. But even these cannot go beyond 96kHz.

The EMU 0404 USB interface can handle 192kHz out of USB, but you need to install special drivers first.

Other interface types like Firewire can handle sampling rates greater than 96kHz, but you need to have a computer (PC or MAC) that has this port, plus a suitable DAC of course.

Then there is the issue of the music player software, and there are a number of choices here.

I just bought (4) 24/96 albums on HDTracks. Two were Chesky comps. and actually Area 31 was a Chesky production. They sound great but while I can output 192kHz from the PC, I'm not about to sell the NOVA I just got, or send 192kHz to the 96kHz max. Nova DAC chip.
