How to get rid of chrome shine/ temporarily
« on: 24 Feb 2017, 07:07 pm »
So I want to scan or photograph a motorcycle to create a 3d image.
Chrome / shiny surfaces are the worst for this .

Is there any type of black spray or powder, that can very easily be washed away with a hose, that won't damage the chrome.
Safe enough that someone would let me spray their prized Harley .
Does such a product exist ?
Thanks

The simplest/cheapest would be to use a spray bottle to mist with water and shake a vacuum bag or furnace filter at it.

Wax on without the wax off.

Wax on without the wax off.

Quite labour intensive though...

"would let me spray their prized Harley "
I suggest you tread lightly there. Most of the guys I know would probably offer to break off a body part and stick it in an uncomfortable place..
I would say that you might want to talk to a dealer. Ask him if he knows if any of their customers might be interested..

Just want to see you stay in one piece there Stlrman. Hate to loose a perfectly good audiophile!

I hear you Bob!!
Probably gonna skip the entire idea BUT check this out:
This is a 3d Harley render, what I had envisioned.

But it took this guy 5 days to render this !! Waaay too much work flow for me .

Easy peazy. There is a product called "dulling spray" made by Krylon. Comes in a spray can. You can pick up in any good pro camera store or order from someplace like B&H. spray on light coats. Wipe off with soft cloth. It's essentially a wax dispersed in a solvent. (Don't get "Matte Spray"....that's an acrylic product.) It works well but sometimes in close ups you can see a somewhat mottled appearance. If the dulling spray doesn't come off cleanly then a non polar solvent like mineral spirits would work, but generally don't need. Besides easy to remove, it will not harm paint or chrome in any way.

Just let me ride it to work for a few days.
There won't by anything shiny left on it by mid week!

Pittsburgh must be downwind from Harrisburg.
Sounds like you were lucky enough to escape.

Hey Todd, I didn't see Dulling Spray on B&H, which is hard to believe. Set Shop carries but won't ship spray cans. Hopefully Pittsburgh still has a B&M photo store that might have. An art supply store MAY have it.

I'll send you a partial can if you can't find it.

This stuff is exactly what you asked about.
