SOLD: Dodd Variable Gain Tube Pre-Amplifier - $1200
« on: 19 Apr 2018, 11:17 pm »
I am the third owner of this this Dodd Audio variable gain preamp. The unit is in great condition having been in a smoke free pristine environment since it was made.  One of the nicest sounding preamps I’ve heard and it will be sadly missed.  Has Mundorf Supreme Silver / Oil cap upgrade @ $300, precision cut resistors @ $200, and Russian 1977 6H30P-DR tube purchased from Upscale Audio @ $190.  Includes Ctek charger @  $50 and Power-Sonic PS-12180 battery @ $50 (recommended by Gary) for a total cost of $2,290.  Also has a nice Cocobolo face and remote (volume only).  Stock tube (Russian 6H6) also included.   It is always charged or charging by the Ctek charger when in use.  Once set up, you do nothing until the battery needs replacing.  Buyer pays transaction fees. I will cover shipping at my asking price. If the pictures look familiar it's because they are from the previous seller (who apparently has a better camera than I!). Everything is in exactly the same condition as when I purchased it aside from a few more hours on the tubes. Thanks for looking.

The Russian 6H30H-DR is the best tube for this set up. I tried them all. Once you’ve had the DR you will never go back.

What a great designer/engineer Gary was.  :notworthy:  If I had the funds it would be long gone.

How long does the battery last for play time? How long does it take to recharge?

You leave the charger connected all the time, so you can play as long as you like. The Ctek charger is so clean there is no difference with or without it connected. This is based on my experience with my Dodd tube buffer.

I myself use a Easter Electric BBA: buffer booster amp that acts like a preAmp. its a Champ.
It also offers only 2 knobs on the front: gain and volume.

I cant recommend these type of BBA;s enough.
Not just for improving the SQ, but especially for those of us who like older music where the recording was not that great. The Gain adjustment fixes it quite well.

GLWS.
Anyone serious about this amp should just try it ...
