Vid card question
« on: 1 Jul 2016, 11:17 pm »
Hello computer folks.

I just bought (new to the market) AMD 480X sapphire vid card. 8gbs of ram it's awesome. My question; are there any reasons why I would not use a separate power supply on this card? The one I have is good at 650 watts but has anyone tried using a dedicated power supply on their vid cards, if so did it help?

I have 400 watt power-smart supply I tried  this with. The problem is wouldn't turn on because I think the power supplies need to see a connect to the mother board to turn on? Would that be a correct assumption and would this be a common problem with all computer power supplies not turning on?

Thanks

There are ways to do this, but I recommend upgrading the PSU if it is not able to handle the job. It is going to look all mad scientist unless you have a large case to conceal the extra power supply, but some folks like that look.  :D But as long as you have them both plugged into the same surge protector, and have your cabling insulated well you should be fine. http://www.overclock.net/t/771029/how-to-connect-a-second-psu-to-power-only-graphics-card

I wonder if these are still available? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817104054&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-VigLink-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=6146846&SID=iq5223nzwv000kb500053

Would be interesting use 2 independent monitors instead or even 3.

Really appreciate that GentleBender. For some reason I didn't use the same Power bar. I will try that.  :thumb:. The Vid card only requires a 150 watt supply but I thought I would try it.

FullRange, picked up a new 144HZ Benq LED monitor also.

You will probably need an adapter like this too. It will make things simple and safe. https://www.amazon.com/Add2PSU-Multiple-Power-Supply-Adapter/dp/B009P98Q8U

Maybe Mr. Bender Bending Rodríguez already addressed this but you can (need to?) attach the power output from the PSU to the card to even POST. I've built my own PCs for the last 15 years with about 5+ year duration for each and with my current rig learned that I had to buy a new PSU with this particular output to the vid card.

I don't find it overly expensive, but that is only my point of view. You can do it without an adapter, but you risk much to save a "few" dollars. If you look at my first post here you will find it in the first link there. I'd rather lead people to safer alternatives, but each person has their own levels of reasonable risk.

Did this ever get off the ground? Just wondering what your decision was.
