I usually buy used because I'm so cheap but recently had some experiences at two bay area stores:

Blue Moon Audio in Pacifica - lots of good brands.  Spendors, and giant Tannoys are very impressive.  And there is plenty of used equipment at various price levels.  Len is very easy to talk to.

Tone of Music Audio -  1303 D Castro Street SF
Went to the recent opening of the new store (formerly in-home store).  Alon Wolf talked about and demonstrated Magico speakers at the opening - very impressive.  New brands being added - Devore speakers are coming soon.  Tim is also very friendly and gives good advice.

Wow, thanks Mortsnets. I had no idea of these new stores. I am not looking for anything but now I have new places to suggest to friends when they decide to advance beyond their bluetooth Jambox!
 
The timing is right in SF, we can see that there is a lot more money floating around these days! Ugh, I wish that weren't true, SF is surely changing.

I recently had the pleasure of working with Tim at Tone of Music in the purchase of a new turntable.  I have to say that he's very friendly, very knowledgeable, and takes the time and effort to listen to you.  He also carries a lot of very cool gear, and has a great vinyl collection

I'll definitely check out Blue Moon next time I'm over that way.

Have been wanting to check out Tone, will definitely head over.  Am in the east bay and enjoy going to Music Lovers in Berkeley.  Picked up a nice used VPI Scout there and received great service.
