Title: Welcome! - The Vinyl Circle
Post by: TheChairGuy on 27 Aug 2009, 01:57 pm
Welcome all!

New'ish requirements at AudioCircle require this sticky...but, the welcome mat has been out to all active, returning and inquiring vinylphools for some time.

Each circle tends to take on it's own 'lilt' based on the activities of participants and moderator(s) alike. I see this circle as a place where there are no 'stupid' participants, questions or experiments.  We're all on a road together - each of us with our share of foibles, expertise, and aptitudes - let's enjoy the ride in its entirety.

I was tapped as Moderator a few years ago by member Josh K., who at the time was inactive in vinyl and was looking for a more active participant.  I had just returned to vinyl after 4 of my most miserable years of music listening ever - exclusively with compact disc.  I tried and failed and was tortured by digi-titus for 4 years

Clearly, digital has improved dramatically and at quite reasonable prices the past few years....but, there is nothing as alluring as dropping a needle on a well cleaned record and playing it for me.  As good as digital has gotten - vinyl continues (at this writing) to reign supreme.  I suspect my time as caretaker of this hallowed circle will pass the day I feel otherwise.

As one's hearing acuity is lessened as we age no matter how well you take care of yourself...that day may one day occur.  But, for now, vinyl reigns supreme when my system goes on.

Come one, come all - all questions are entertained here - please let our team or dedicated vinylphools answer your needs or sympathize in your vinyl plight (we have ALL spent some time in vinyl hell, I assure you ).  Whether the questions has to do with 'synergy', turntable or cartridge selection, record cleaning, more arcane stuff like capacitive and resistive loading and the like - your posts will be fielded successfully here.

Don't forget to peruse the archives for years of discussions that might relate to your needs...it's a great resource to have around :thumb:

Regards, John / TheChairGuy

Nice to have our own little niche!  99%+ of my listening is via vinyl (and has been for the last 15-20 years), so I'm defintaly a vinylholic[tm]!  :-)

Hey guys - gr8 and thanks!

As vinyl is not a plug in and play technology - it requires a lot more hand holding for many.  I've always seen this circle as a place where the voodoo and seemingly impossible task of successful vinyl playback is helped along by experienced folks.

Its in all our best interests as vinylphools to foster more active participants in this craft.  So, as much as I might veer or sway topics - this place becomes irrelevant when you all stop actively helping and participating.

Vinyl rules....perhaps not by as much as it did ~5 years ago, but my honest feeling is that if you consider yourself an audiophool and don't participate in vinyl....your like a chef claiming to be great, but you never step foot in a kitchen 8)

John

John,
Three years ago I decided to "get back" into vinyl. A combination of growing tired of digital sound and an increased desire to again hear the many records in my collection from the 60's and early 70's that were never relased on CD. After a month of listening on my B & O Beogram from the mid 70's, I purchased the Pro-ject Perspective with a Sumiko Blackbird cartridge. A powerful TT/cartrdige combination for under $2,000. Three years later I find myself listening to vinyl 80+% of the time and all new music is vinyl unless it was only realesed as a CD. Music once again had the magic I remembered from the 60's and 70's. Last month I found a used SME 20/2 with a Series IV.Vi arm on Audiogon and even with the Blackbird, it has delviered a big time WOW factor to my system.

I give this background as a lead in to my belief that vinyl does indeed live again and the resurgence is real. There is a reason vinyl is the only physical medium to show increased sales in each of the last 3 years--the sound. I am fortunate to have a great indie record store in Spokane that is celebrating its 20th anniversary. The owner commented that he started as a record store, evolved into a CD store and now is a record store again (and he couldn't be happier). If it wasn't for vinyl's resurgence, he would have had to close. Vinyl still rules, and if my local indie record store is any indication of a national trend, then perhaps more than anytime since the early-mid 80's.

I look forward to participating, sharing and learning in The Vinyl Circle. Thanks for being the mod.

Thanks for moderating.

I agree with VinylLady. .  Between the new issues, increasing reissues and tons of used records, it's a great time to indulge in vinyl.  CD and digital downloads can't compete with taking a record out of the sleeve, enjoying the artwork and liner notes and enjoying the best possible sound available.  I look forward to learning from others on this thread.

Post by: TheChairGuy on 14 Sep 2009, 06:50 pm
Yeah - it's such a bloody inconvenient medium, with so many things pulling us aside now then decades past, it MUST be the sound that's bring us pleasure.

Very few folks have more available free time these days, very few folks have more disposable income than they did....so there really does seem to be something more alluring about vinyl sound all in all.

We're here to congregate and reminisce a bit...but to also look forward to (unbelievably) a real future for vinyl once again.

Rejoice...the musical magic, too, returned for me with my return to vinyl after 5 years in the digital darkness :(

Mark,
I agree. I recently purchased the new Mobile Fidelity release of The Cars and the new remastered reissue of The Smiths' The Queen is Dead and on a recent trip to Denver found a NM copy of UB40's Labour of Love II, The Best of Leonard Cohen, and Jefferson Airplane's After Bathing at Baxters (my original copy from the 60's was, let's say, abused). My VPI 17F is getting a real workout.

BTW, that is a very nice system and set up you have!

I've just recently put ARMod (a DIY table) on my granite slab that the Technics was on. I have now taken vinyl playback to the next level as the granite has absorbed any remaining motor energy and the background is very, very black.

I will be bring several CDs made from this set up to the RMAF. I recorded about 6 of my favorite sounding albums for your amusement. It will be interesting to hear comments about the recordings.

I hope we have a chance to meet at RMAF.

I'll be in the Audio by Van Alstine/Salk Speakers booth with Frank and Jim.

I have a very ancient Philips CDR 765 stand alone CD recorder (it takes music cd-r/cd-rw dics) and I try to manually index tracks (if they aren't played into each other), cause you can only record music or track indexes, not both at the same time.

Then I transport the dics over to my computer and download it thru the media player (POS). I then dump each track into Calkwalk Proaudio to clean the beginning and ends up and when I done, I burn to disc. It works pretty good, but it is a hassle, because my new computer only has Windows Media Player which is a total stupid piece of software.

Here is my vinyl list for the show:

David Gilmour - On An Island
Supertramp - Brother, Where You Bound
Andreas Vollenweider - White Winds
Stephane Grappelli/David Grisman - Live
Rodger Waters - The Pros and Cons of Hitchhicking
Friedmann - Indian Summer
Genesis - Selling England by the Pound

How's that?

That's a nice vinyl list. All good choices!  :thumb: :D

About a year ago I bought an Alesis Masterlink ML 9600 hard disk recorder. It does a nice job of making CDs from vinyl. It allows one to make both Red Book and 24 bit/96kHZ recordings. http://www.alesis.com/masterlink. I haven't taken the time to learn how to use all the bells and whistles that came with it. I insert the track changes on the fly as I record vinyl to the hard disk. It allows me to burn a CD straight from the hard disk. It does a very nice job.

I'll stop by the room to meet you, say hi and listen.

Thanks Laura,

Marantz also makes a nice CDR burner for around $700. It's the CDR-632. I just don't burn too many LPs to CD except for occasions like this. The very thought of burning an LP to CD makes me ill.

Paul,

Mine is a Beogram 2402. It is packed away in my basement in the original box which still has the price tag on it--$325, which was a lot of money for a turntable in the mid 70's.

Are you going to RMAF?

We won't have a table this year, but you can hear the rest of the electronics (amps, preamps with great phono boards and DACs) all available in solid state, or hybrid designs. Frank's DAC will make you tolerate your CD listening experience.

Title: Denon MC carts
Post by: Bob A (SD) on 19 Oct 2009, 09:35 pm
I'm posing simply because there seems to be missing some classic carts that I consider not only excellent performers but extreme overachievers for their prices.

As a sexagenarian I've had numerous carts over the decades (e.g.  Denon DL301, Shure V15 various series, Grado ZF3E+, Shure M91ED, MicroAcoustics 2002e, Empire 66QE/X, and others I simply can't remember).  But those that floated to the top and grabbed me were the Denon MC carts.  I'm currently running the superlative DL103D and very low output DL304.  My TT is a highly modified Merrill - AR "The Turntable" coupled with a DIY step up transformer based on a pair of CineMag CMQEE-3440A cans.  I sincerely believe I'm at the cusp of diminishing returns with this setup against higher cost newer fare.

At any rate, I highly recommend the Denon MC carts, especially the venerable 103 series.

Older snap as the table is now using a Target wall shelf and a PIB-1 among other things

Micro Acoustics...that's a blast from the past.

I'm thinking of trying a Denon DL-301 myself. It must be a classic for a reason. If I do, I hope it works out better than the Shure V15 Type V MR, it may be a classic, but it didn't float my boat at all.

Hi

Just thought I'd say a quick hi to everyone. Being 50 this year ( never thought I'd say that in public ) and growing up with 5 older brothers, gave me the chance to listen to, and inherit, some great albums over the years ( both 33 and 45's )

Right now, I'm using a VPI Scout, and 2 arms. 1 using a Koetsu Black, other will have a rebuilt Jade Platinum ( as soon as I get it back from a rebuild from Koetsu )

Thanks and look forward to reading everyone's posts!

Hi Paul,
things go around a lot on this planet!  So glad to hear of that periphery ring!  My episodes with it rubbed against my wish to have the HW-19 Mk III look as close to "stock" as possible.  But it was necessary to change the suspension, and that brought some other dislocations, so I opted for "stock" status instead of a "modified" look.

The only things that could make me change from my HW-19 Mk III would be a huge load of funds :green:   to purchase one VPI Classic with its peripheral ring, or, the Townshend damped turntable system.  The Townshend "The Rock 7" would probably be my first choice, due to my personal ignorance and unfamiliarity with unipivot tonearms...aversion to explore the unknowns of unipivots.

Thanks, and regards,

Hi I'm new here but I know a few of the regular posters from another forum. I'm more of a vinyl collector with basic knowledge of equipment, although I like to dabble in cartridge loading and I'm a sucker for experimenting with new styluses with different profiles.  I'm fortunate to work from home and get the opportunity to listen near field to vinyl for 8 hours most days while working at my pc  :D. As you will see from my system profile I have a collection of vintage hifi and admit to being somewhat of a hoarder

Laura - I'm currently listening to a compilation of British Acid Folk which Steven Collins of the Owl Service put together which I found here under the 7th April entry http://www.rifmountain.com/ (http://www.rifmountain.com/)
It will give you a good insight into some of the more elusive Brit Acid Folk bands from the golden era of the late 60s to early 70s.

I've seen Steven and the Owl Service a few times, their best performance being at the Green Man Festival. The legendary Alison O'Donnell of Mellow Candle has collaborated recently with the Owl Service on a few songs.

I had hoped to be at the Cropedy Convention http://fairportconvention.com/guide.php (http://fairportconvention.com/guide.php)  this weekend to see Fairport Convention again and perhaps get a chance to chat with Judy Dyble (Femvox on 1st Fairport LP and of Trader Horne fame, along with many other outputs), but alas some health problems have quashed that notion.

Welcome, what does your set-up consist of? Post some pics.

Hello All, Im also new here and a vinyl junkie. Been listening to vinyl since the way early 60's and have managed to collect 4300+ records over the years. I prefer new vinyl but will get into a used record if I know where it's been. I have all analogue, vintage gear with some since it was new.

One day soon I'll post some pics of what I call "My Vintage Junk".
Looks like this will be a regular home for me since I do 85% of my listening with vinyl, the other 15% I'd have to say is tape, both cassette and Open Reel.

Hi All --after 30 years or so I am digging up some vinyl that has been stored away --now all I have to do is put together a system to listen with

Since this is for lovers of vinyl  I post a few pictures of the JVC cutting center in Los Angeles-- a lot of vinyl was mastered there

Hello guys.

New guy here. Just looking to get into vinyl. I have been lurking for a little bit, just reading the "Newbie" and "Cleaning Secrets" threads.

It's overwhelming, everything that goes into proper vinyl care and playback.  :o

Anyway, just here to learn a bit and hopefully get to some great music hunts and listening sessions.  :D

Dave,
Welcome to AC.  As far as being overwhelmed- just jump in to vinyl and enjoy it.  Yeah, you get it down better as you go along, but it's a journey. There's lots of guys here to answer questions.

It's labor of love.  For some of us it is also practical as we got into serious music listening years before digital.

Joined AudioCircle a few weeks ago when I was researching speakers.  Really like the variety of great info and helpful folks.

I've got a Well Tempered Reference table, a Lyra Delos cartridge feeding Cardas tonearm cables into a Jeff Rowland Design Group Consummate phono and line stage.  I've never heard vinyl sound so good.  We had friends over last weekend--not audiophiles--and we just happened to compare a Dire Straits CD to LP and everyone (even LOML) was pretty amazed at how much better the vinyl sounded (and that was using a BlackCube phono stage since my Consummate phono stage is out for repairs).

Hello,
I realize that even though I have made some comments on this Circle, I have not properly introduced myself.  As I consider how to do that, my first thought is how the hell have all of you guys (and guyettes) spent so much time in my record collection without my noticing all of you in my music room.

Seriously, every day I see someone post a picture of an album I have and my initial thoughts are always—wow, I haven’t heard that one in a long time.  As an example, today, Vinyl Lady posted both the Band and the Grass Roots, both of which I have, the Butterfield Blues Band just showed up and Thin Lizzy (that I don’t have) is also mentioned.

I bought my first album in 1963, I posted it on P-Man’s site, and have continued to buy/collect records, (including the years that I worked in a record store Orpheus Records in Washington D.C. if anyone remembers that store) for a very long time.

In the 80’s, CD’s started to come around, and I went back and forth.  I will admit that I have a love-hate relationship with Vinyl since I think it is a terrible storage medium, and in all the years that I was actively buying records I was aware that much of the physical product that I was buying just sucked and I hated the record companies for putting out crap versions of vital and often crucial music—any ABC/Dunhill, all of the Mamas and Papas (not to mention US versions of the Beatles albums), almost anything on RCA, including the Jefferson Airplane etc, were all badly pressed by companies that simply didn’t care.

When I was given a choice, I took it.  A few years later Apple came out with iTunes, and for the first time I was able to sequence songs in the order I wanted to hear them, drag and drop songs from different artists and albums and easily put together song lists of any length that I could put on an iPod and hook up to my stereo—I was in heaven, but I could only do this with digitized music, not the more that 2500 albums that I have picked up over the years (now I control my digital library from my iPad and don’t even have to leave the comfort of my Perfect Chair to listen to any of the 20,000 songs that I have digitized and the many song lists that I have created over time)
Fast forward to a year or so ago and I join AC to learn more about non-traditional speaker companies, especially Salk and Vapor Sound, and what do I find as I look around---People who have a love of vinyl, and who clearly have much the same taste in music that I have, and you guys have me listening to vinyl again.
So I have to thank you for getting me to get off my butt and put an album on my turntable (Rega P3, Aurum Wood  Cartridge and Bellari Phono Pre-amp, running through a Marsh pre-amp to Parasound JC1’s and my beloved Vapor Joules—see below).

I have over the years bought CD versions of many of my favorite albums, some sound better than the vinyl one I have, some don’t sound as well, but there is clearly a difference in the vinyl.  I am not a vinyl purist, I have some truly exceptional CDs of my favorite albums but I no longer gaze at the wall of records and think of them as wall paper, now they are something that I rifle through and say to myself, let’s try this one and see how it has held up.

So to all of you, but especially P-Man, Vinyl Lady, Devil Doc, Cactus Bob, ACHiPO and Toni Rambold (who I assume is not the fictional german police man), I want to thank you for getting me back to vinyl and having me look at the collection I started many years ago
Phil

Phil,

I enjoyed reading your "formal" introduction to the vinyl circle. Aren't you glad you didn't dump your vinyl collection when CDs were all the rage? I know I'm glad I didn't dump mine. Like you, in the mid to late 80's CDs became the primary way I listened to music. I would still play a record here and there, but CD was the primary medium. I bought a lot of greatest hits CDs because I didn't want to spend the money to have CD versions of all my albums and some have never made it to a digital format.

In late 2005/early 2006 I reconnected with my vinyl collection when I bought a Pro-ject Perspective TT and Sumiko Blackbird cartridge. Since then almost all my home listening is to vinyl. When I'm cooking, running around the house or working in the backyard, I play CDs or stream from iTunes through Apple TV plugged into my OPPO 105D. Otherwise, it's all vinyl.

Welcome back!

Laura

laura, thanks for the reply, yes, I am glad to be back and listening to those lovely crackles and pops :green:, by the way, I just picked up the MoFi 45 RPM John Wesley Harding, which does sound wonderful, again thank you for pointing me towards these recordings, so far I have Bringing it All Back Home, Highway 61, Blond on Blond, and now JWH.  Am waiting for Nashville Skyline to complete the late 60's Dylan collection.  I haven't bought any of the early ones, am thinking of those, any advice?

Hi all, my name is Steve (user name Stevoz), I live in Central Victoria, Australia and look forward to discussing all things audio, well mainly analogue, with like minded 'audiofools'! I will be nice :thumb: and stick to talking audio, and not deviate from this like I did on Audiokarma, which lead to me being banned :duh: after I commented on the US election. Seriously though, I love my vinyl and enjoy learning and sharing new things regarding what is still the best sound format around.....analogue.

My system consists of a replinthed  and re-damped CEC BD3200 TT (pictured), Vincent PHO-8 phono stage, Cambridge Audio Azur 640R receiver, CA Azur 650BD multi disc player, Aaron ATS-5 mains, Aaron ATS-1 rears, Aaron CC-240 centre, Aaron SUB-240 subwoofer (never used with music playback, only HT!), CA and Monster interconnects and Tara Labs 'Prism Clara" speaker cables. My cartridge collection consists of the following: Grace Level ll AL, Denon DL103, Grace F8C, Grace F8L, ADC XLM mkll, and a Shure M97xE. I returned to analogue late last year after around thirty years of fooling myself that digital was the new frontier. Don't get me wrong, it's a great format for convenience and clinical sound, but to me, it lacks an emotional connect. I am enjoying my music to the max again! Looking forward to both serious chat and humorous banter with you all. Cheers...

I am just musing over John's introduction.  My school won the NCAA March Madness last week.  John's school won last year.  He was a senior when 'Nova won for the first time.  His school closed the next day in 1985 for partying.  Mine did not.  We are the same age.  Just feeling nostalgic when we had good discussions here about all the little tweaks.  Plasticlay, anyone? :D

I miss you, John, aka the Chairguy.  God rest your soul and your bandana.

Hi,
I'm in New Zealand, currently in Covid Lockdown, catching up on a bit of audio maintenance while I have the time.
Realised my stereo arm on my main rig a Garrard 401 with Tecnoarm A and Ortofon MC25FL was beginning to pick up motor noise and starting to distort, at well over 1000hrs, so no surprises, pulled out my spares I'd been hoarding for a rainy day. Anyway I have an old Origin Live OL1 which needed the wires put back in (lord only knows why the previous owner pulled them out?) and a Denon DL103. Discovered that the cartridge tags were missing, and not wanting to cannibalise a good set from a SME/Technics headshell I found some scrap copper sheet and manufactured some new ones (tell me why solder does not want to stick to copper sheet?). Long story short 2 days later I finally got everything working including a copper plate above the Denon 103 to add some mass, found some sparse well recorded female vocal (Emel) and wow, sounds pretty good.

Hi folks

I sold my last turntable in 2010. Here I am today, waiting for a Technics SL1500c to arrive. I jumped on the digital bandwagon early, and it took me a long time to get the sound quality I have now. But something is missing. For me that something has to do with the way digital music is being distributed today. Downloading a file is just not tactile like shopping for a record, or even a CD. Streaming leaves me cold. I can’t get into it, even though it should be a musical paradise. To me it is more like being left in a library of books and not being able to decide what to read. And the amount of computer and other complications, VPNs, servers and all the software and hardware issues that go along with them are just starting to hollow out my experience of listening to digital music.
So, I decided to dive back into analog again. I want to explore some of the music I missed the first time around. The Beatles, for instance, were off my radar completely. I was just a bit too young to experience the band and have never got around to buying any Beatles music on CD. So now I plan to explore a lot of great music in the original format.
I have already purchased a dozen records, a couple new ones and the rest pre owned jazz and classical. I notice that at least in this market you can find a lot of jazz and classical records in great shape for much less than “popular” music. I saw a beat up Dire Straits album, their first one, selling for twice what a lot of classical or jazz records in great condition sell for. I love that album, but I will pay a bit more for a new remastered one. Shopping for records is a blast!
So, why the 1500c? I found a great deal on a barely used one. It gets good reviews, has pretty good isolation for an unsuspended table and with the removable headshell it is easy to upgrade cartridges. It will do for a start, and we will see how this goes. If I am enjoying myself I will want to upgrade before too long.
Looking forward to reading some of the threads in this forum and contributing what I can.
Happy Listening
Brian, in Nova Scotia, Canada

New to this circle, and to AudioCircle (although I've joined in 2020).

Got back into vinyl some 5 years ago after getting rid of my turntable and records in the early 90s.  My current setup includes a Thorens TD 135/II (Trudy) and a Thorens TD 124/II (Jackie), used in rotation (no pun intended).  I also have a Garrard 301 grease bearing project. but that will take some time to complete.

Hoping to take part in many more threads and discussions here.

New to this circle and to AudioCircle.  I listen primarily to vinyl. I’m a fan of vintage tables generally, and Thorens tables particularly, with 4 tables in active use at the moment and another three sitting around asking me what I plan to do with them next. I run both MC and MM carts. I prefer the sound of the MCs and the trouble free nature of the MMs. And generally use tubes throughout my systems of late. As with most folks, I tend to think my taste in music is pretty wide ranging; whether that’s quantitatively true or not, who can say.
