replacing $10,000 dac with $100 dac

I'm sending in my DAC in for some upgrades. So I took my 5 year old $99 ODAC and plugged it in to my main rig.  It was almost plug and play and up and running in 30 seconds. I'm using mrendu, Hqplayer, Roon...A lot of variables for something to be off. But nope!  A quick adjustment with Hqplayer to do PCM only, instead of up sampling to DSD, and I'm listening to music.

Is it better? NO. is it totally acceptable for a few weeks? Hell yes! No clicks or pops so smooth, dead quiet when the music isn't playing.  The one thing I'm noticing is now I have to turn the volume all the way to 100% on the preamp, and almost 100% on HQplayer. Is there an obvious reason for this? My ODAC is usb powered and my other is obviously not. Any thing else it could be?

odac is designed to be paired with o2 for output stage?

Yeah you see a lot of that. But on my desktop system, with my 2 watt amp Bottlehead S.E.X., I only had to turn it up 25% to achieve decent listening volumes.
