New Singers Who Can Actually Sing
« on: 14 Jul 2017, 03:32 pm »
Maybe I am just too old. (That is rhetorical, no comments needed, move on--and definitely no pots disparaging the kettle).

I can't seem to find any new artists who can actually sing. I mean stand-up and belt it out without resorting to jumping around, flashing lights, or flashing skin.

I grew listening to Gordon Lightfoot, Joan Baez, Grace Slick, Tom Rush, Ian & Sylvia, Joni Mitchell, Jennifer Warnes, and Kate Wolf to name a few pop/folk stars. On the more sedate side was Streisand.  Not my style but what a voice.

So what do I hear from the latest generation?  No real vocal talent except for Beth Hart. I know Alison Krauss has many fans but I think she lacks range and frequently tries too hard at the top end.

This post is not meant to start an argument, but rather garner suggestions.  I desperately need new music more than new equipment.  Who am I missing?

The show American Epic has some newer artists doing some vintage tunes.

If you like Beth Hart kind of stuff, someone who can actually sing AND "belt" it out, you need these:

Female vocals on these by Danielle Schnebelen a.k.a. Danielle Nicole (Nicole certainly is easier to spell than Schnebelen - I can see why she changed) will sear your soul and burn down your house.

And this ... Joan Osborne is the female vocals on this terrific release by Trigger Hippy

Edit: Joan is obviously not "new", but this is a new release.

You would need to define new  :icon_lol:

I like Jane Monheit, Loreena McKennitt, Lisa Gerard (Dead Can Dance or solo). All very different styles. Karnataka (proggish) has a couple of different female vocalists who I like the sound of. The male vocalist on Mike Oldfield's Man on the Rocks is pretty good but the production quality is harsh. RPWL has a great male vocalist (prog). Same with Pineapple Thief, also prog. Proto-Kaw has a good vocalist who sounds like a rock version of Midge Ure. Beyonce seems to have a good voice, I'd love to hear her do other genres.

But a lot of modern artists sound like they have damaged vocal cords, kind of like Marianne Faithful (anyone listen to her before she found drugs?).

I think I am also getting old - I mostly listen to instrumental stuff nowadays.

Ugh, are these (my recommendations) chicks "real singers"? Now that I think about it I am not sure if they have the talent and range you are seeking or not as I've never critically listened for that. All I know is they CAN sing without auto-tune, are very enjoyable, talented (at least in their own right) and have terrific voices.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I will make a list and visit Spotify and YouTube.

I will try to keep an open mind but at first blush Rachal Nagy appears to violate at least two of my parameters---flashing skin and backfield in motion.   :rotflmao:

rockadany, We all know you purchased the album for the music.  :no_see:

I like Stacey Kent as well, but her voice sounds a little mousey to me. For more of a singer in the same vein check out Emilie-Claire Barlow's "Seule Ce Soir"
