Crossing open baffle bass and a bookshelf speaker
« on: 21 Jan 2017, 04:49 am »

I have sealed box bookshelf speakers which I'd like to augment with open baffle bass, crossed @75Hz.
When listenig to the music I pull the speakers into the room for near field listening and that is fine.
However, when I watch TV the speakers are some 2ft from the wall behind them. As open baffle speakers need to be away from the back wall I wondered what I could expect will happen with bass? Will it totally mess up the sound?

Before going all OB I enjoyed this set up with the H-frame Alphas. For good OB bass they need to be pulled out into the room. If you build H-frames you can place them on castors or put furniture sliders underneath.

No. The >3' rule relates to spatial rendition, so it's critical for around 600-700hz on up.
For <75hz, you'll be fine @ 2'. If it's a flat baffle, you can rotate (toe-in) a bit as well.
