Is HDMI asynchronous (does sending device clock precision matter)?

Is the HDMI interface / standard asynchronous, or, does it operate more akin to standard Toslink or Spdif protocols?

My reason for asking is to better understand to what degree outbound jitter matters in comparison to "standard" legacy digital outputs, and correspondingly, to understand to what degree higher precision clocks in the sending device(s) impact HDMI sonics.

In a related note, any chance of a PaceCar or equivalent that would take multichannel HDMI in and feed projectors and audio with aligned precision signals out?
