MC 275 tube amp to drive headphones
« on: 4 Sep 2013, 03:21 pm »
I remember reading that Les Paul used an older Mc tube amp to drive his headphones in his studio. Is there a simple ,safe way to do this?
Would be driving BD T-1 600 ohm 4 wire config.  Thanks!

ESP provides a simple attenuator for limiting current / voltage to the headphones.

to make something like this

the other option is to use a transformer but I can't recall the manufacturer.

ALO used to stock something for an off the shelf solution, perhaps someone else knows of a commercial product.

The one thing to bear in mind is that some amps do not like a common ground - i would put the output transformers on the MC275 into this category - thus the headphones will need to be used with balanced cables so as to avoid the common ground of the TRS plug.

Also, hopefully the resulting 120 ohm output impedance seen by the T-1's and damping factor of 5 won't be a problem.

I would recommend a purpose designed headphone amp with a low output impedance. You could probably build a DIY O2 for about the same coin. If you want a reasonably priced tube headphone amp, there's the Millett hybrid and the Torpedo, or the Bottlehead Crack.

Used it, but not with the T1's.
I've read a review somewhere and the guy was using the Bryston with the Beyers.
