Can a class d amp compare to the sound of a dynaco st 70?

  • To whom more was given more will be required.

No, they are too different to be compare in topology and sound.

I've never owned an ST70, but I've heard one on more than a few occasions. A modern day Class D amp will rival it in several areas, most notably in the foundation of bass, control, resolution, speed and dynamics.

Owned an ST70 many moons ago.  I only have one class D amp, a Nuprime IDA-8 integrated amp (class A preamp)/DAC unit on my desktop.  Have heard other class D amps.  Never heard one that would sound like my ST70 (does not mean there can be none).

As tube amps go, the ST70, is okay, but it's not something I could live with. Obviously there are many more and far better tube amps to be had. OTOH, switching / digital amps have come a long way in recent years. And like other or not, they most definitely have advantages over tube amps.
