But it is not audiophile!   :)

I think is better idea, and not much expensive: neutrik connectors + star quad cable.

Looks like these 305 specials only have the balanced inputs and no RCA inputs.

Now they do! This is how I addressed the issue.

If you're starting with a single ended source and output jack, what difference does the cable/jack/adaptor make on a $100 speaker?

I say that as an owner of a fully balanced system with balanced DAC/preamp/DSP, balanced mono-blocks, and alternatively balanced active speakers.  I'm also an old fart audiophile who doesn't believe in wires so going balanced eliminates all the single ended boutique BS.

Here's a couple of pricier alternatives if you need to spend a bit more:

Incorrect. The TRS plug you linked is a small version and also it is stereo. What you need is a TRS 1/4 inch (MONO) plug with RCA female adaptor:

What DoubleJ linked is correct.

Incorrect (!).  A TRS plug is a 3-wire balanced connector, a mono 2-wire unbalanced connector would be a TS plug, but yes, the Hosa GPR101 link is correct.

 :duh:

Ooops!

You're absolutely right!!! TRS is different from TS indeed! Thanks!

I always get confused with this stuff as my hands type too quickly before eyes see what is wrong. Here are primers:

So ideally, one would have a balanced pre-amp with two IC's connecting to the speakers. I get it now!!! 8)

They're intended for use with an entry-level prosumer or hobbyist recording setup, hence the lack of single-ended RCA inputs.

It would be hard to find a recording mixing console or digital audio workstation without balanced outputs, no matter how basic or inexpensive.

Steve is right, JBL knows where a majority of these 305's will be used in recording studios and the like. That being said, I am also curious about how the 305's would be in a system with an audiophile differential preamp or perhaps an Auralic Vega using the integral volume control. I'm sure it will sound quite good in that setup as well. The next time Richidoo has his get together, that will be one of the plans  :icon_twisted:

Well, I was thinking more on the lines of a computer/laptop>iFi DSD>305 for something simple, inexpensive and good sounding.

And that's pretty much my exact desktop configuration for my work-from-home office.....and it IS simple, inexpensive and good sounding.   :thumb:

These JBL's are not just for recording engineers any more.

But what exactly? How do you get sound to two speakers from one output on iFi? Both a left and right RCA to balanced IC ? Like this?

Sorry - yes.  I got 6' RCA-to-XLR cables (a little more length than I needed, but the next size down -- 3' -- was too short) from Monoprice via Amazon. Link is below:

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B001VLW398/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I also have an iFi USB power supply to a Lavricables split-feed USB cable, but that's not necessary.  I could really just go: Macbook Pro -> iFi iDSD -> Monoprice cables -> JBL LSR305s.

Hope that helps,  -dB
